HomeMy WebLinkAbout06.23.15_Mentoring_Awareness_Lunch_AnnouncedCITY OF SOUTH BEND PETE BUTTIGIEG, MAYOR Office of the Mayor CONTACT: Kara Kelly, (574) 235 -5853 kkelly @southbendin.gov FOR RELEASE: Tuesday, June 23, 2015 MENTORING AWARENESS BENEFIT TO FEATURE FORMER NOTRE DAME COACH LOU HOLTZ South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Common Council member Gavin Ferlic (At Large) will hold an event Tuesday, June 22 at 2:30pm at the Mayor's Office, 1400 County -City Building to announce a benefit for three area non - profits that focus on mentoring: Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Joseph County, South Bend Education Foundation, and Mentoring Matters. "Lunch with Lou," featuring former Notre Dame football coach Lou Holtz, will be at 11:30 am on Friday, July 31 at Century Center. Individual tickets to the event are $60, and there are a number of sponsorship opportunities available. Information may be found at lunchwithlou.org. "Kids who have positive, adult mentors significantly increase their chances for academic and personal success," Ferlic says. "These three organizations are at the forefront of providing this essential support and there is no more valuable investment our community can make than to support the organizations in return." Holtz coached at Notre Dame from 1986 -1996, leading the Fighting Irish to the 1988 national championship. Many former players cite his inspirational leadership as a major influence on their success beyond the football field. "Lou Holtz is a legend not only as a football coach, but for his ability to motivate people in all walks of life," Mayor Buttigieg says. "His message of service, persistence and excellence echoes the mission that our local mentoring organizations put into practice everyday to support our children."
