The panels will be installed later this year. "This is the City's first solar project," says Therese Dorau, director of South Bend's Office of Sustainability. "It's fitting that the panels will go on the roof of one of our region's most visible and valuable buildings to provide affordable and clean electricity." The project, which will receive additional funds from the Office of Sustainability, is expected to pay for itself in less than nine years, and has an operational lifespan of at least 20 years. Dorau credits technical support from South Bend -based Inovateus Solar, one of the country's top providers of solar energy services, with helping the City secure the grant. Inovateus Solar will offer assistance in the design and installation of the photovoltaic project. "Using the latest technology cuts the City's energy costs, reduces air pollution, and demonstrates South Bend's innovative spirit," Mayor Pete Buttigieg says. "The energy - efficient solar panels will improve our environment while giving another economic boost to local business." F'
