DISCOVER SOUTH BEND SERIES CELEBRATES SPORTS
As part of the yearlong celebration for South Bend's 150th anniversary, the monthly series
"Discover... South Bend" will host two events in August. This month's theme is sports.
On Friday, August 7, at 7pm at The History Museum, 808 W. Washington St., residents are
invited to "Havana Nights" to meet and get autographs from over two -dozen women who played
for the South Bend Blue Sox and other teams of the All- American Girls Professional Baseball
League immortalized the film A League of Their Own. Tickets are $5, with children under 5
admitted free.
In 1947, the All- American Girls' held its spring training in Havana. Fourteen Midwestern cities
fielded teams, including South Bend.
The exhibit Polished in Public, Fierce on the Field: The All - American Girls Professional
Baseball League, which chronicles the story of the All- American Girls Professional Baseball
League from 1943 to 1954 will also be on view with photographs, original uniforms, scrapbooks,
baseballs, and mitts used during the games.
Swing dancing demonstrations by Dan O'Day Dance Club will take place, in addition to a cash
bar and free popcorn to Little League players who wear a team baseball cap. For more

On Sunday, August 9, former All- American Girls' will be honored at the South Bend Cubs game
at Four Winds Field.
