Nearly all residents live within a half -mile of bikeways consisting of 17 miles of separated trails, 20 miles of striped bike lanes, and 34 miles of shared routes. Whether commuting to work, spending time with family, or piling up the miles for exercise, bicycling is just one way to stay fit around the Bend. South Bend Parks and Recreation Department, in conjunction with HealthWorks! Kids' Museum, St. Joseph County Parks, Martin's Super Markets, and the Reducing Obesity Coalition of St. Joseph County again presents the Family Passport to Play. These events offer families the opportunity to enjoy our local parks and engage in activities that are both physical and fun. Two upcoming free, family- friendly events are "ROC UR Body" on Friday, September 11 from 5:30 to 8 pm at Howard Park, and "Fall Family Fun Fair" on Saturday, October 3 from 10 am to 3 pm at Rum Village Park. Also starting in September, the South Bend Police Department will host its Citizen's Police Academy. Established to promote understanding of the South Bend Police Department's policies and procedures, the Academy provides training in all aspects of law enforcement that Officers encounter on a daily basis. The Citizen's Police Academy is a nine -week program, beginning September 1, with classes on Tuesday nights from 6 -8:30 pm. Participants, who are subject to a criminal history check, must be South Bend residents age 18 or older with no prior felony convictions. For more information call Lt. Patrick Hechlinski at 235 -7527. As autumn approaches, that means it's time for the City to finalize its budget for fiscal 2016. I want to thank the Common Council for its input on budget priorities and I look forward to a robust dialogue in the weeks ahead to clarify how to achieve our common purpose: to assure that South Bend remains a safe community with economic opportunity for all and to maintain responsible stewardship of public resources with innovations that make government more efficient. Those priorities have fueled a comeback that is evident throughout the city. In the first half of 2015 alone, South Bend has seen over $90 million in private investment and 629 jobs announced. That momentum will propel us into 2016 as we continue to work together to make South Bend stronger.
