AN ORDINANCE REGULATING THE HJNDLING AND.SALE OF
MEAT, MEAT PRODUCTS, AND SEA FOOD AND PROVIDING
FOR THE ISSUANCE OF PERMITS THEREFOR.
SOUTH BEND:
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
Section 1. That it shall be unlawful for any person,
firm or corporation or the agent or employee of any of them, to
sell, offer for sale or bring into, or deliver in the city of
South Bend, Indiana, for the purpose of sale at retail, or pursu-
ant to any contract of sale at retail previously made, any fresh,
cured or uncured meat or meat products, as human food, unless such
person, firm or corporation or the agents or employee of any of
them shall comply with the regulations herein set forth.
Section 2. The walls and ceilings of all rooms in
which meat and meat products are stored for the purpose of sale or
in which they are sold or offered for sale shall be constructed in
such a manner so as'to prevent the entrance of flies and insects.
The roofs shall be kept in good repair and free from leaks. The
walls of any such rooms shall be well plastered, wainscoted or
ceiled with metal or lumber and shall be oil painted or kept well
lime washed, and all interior woodwoD* shall be kept well oiled or
painted with oil paints and be kept washed clean with soap and water.
The floors shall be kept free from defects such as holes or open
cracks and shall be kept clean from litter, sputum, rubbish and /or
accumulated dirt. All meat markets or other places where meat or
meat products are sold or distributed shall be kept clean, well
lighted and ventilated. The other rooms of the meat market shall
be kept clean and free from filth - collecting material and shall be
at all times in a sanitary condition.

Section 3. All vehicles used for transporting meat
and meat products shall be kept in a clean and sanitary condition.
The meat shall be protected from flies and dust while being trans-
ported. No meats shall be sold or peddled on the street unless
kept in a clean closed box, refrigerator or display case so as to
avoid contact with flies and dust and provided with proper ventila-
tion and refrigeration necessary to keep such meat from becoming
contaminated or spoiled while handling.
Neat or meat products that are being sold anywhere with-
in the city of South.Bend shall not be handled by any person or
persons other than those necessarily engaged in making the sale or
offer of sale thereof and when delivered pursuant to sale shall be
wrapped in water proof butchers' paper. No meat or meat products
shall be placed upon the scales weighing same. unless the surface
of such scale is composed of porcelain, glass or other material
impervious to water and kept clean and free from contamination at
all times and it shall be proper when weighing such meat or meat
products to place on the surface of the scale clean white paper and
place the meat thereon.
S -detion 4. Refrigerators and meat hooks shall be kept
perfectly clean. No tainted meat, foodstuff. or other source of con-
tamination shall be placed in such tefrigerator, meat box or display
case with meat that is being sold or offered for sale or kept for
sale. The refrigerator, display case or meat boxes shall be.kept
dry on the inside at all time. All refrigerators, display cases or
meat hooks, scales, platters and trays used in the storing, sale
or offering for sale of meat shall be cleaned daily and scoured.,with
hot water and lye not less than once a week and oftener if necessary
to keep such materials clean and free from odor. After scouring,, it
shall be washed with a- solution of common aoda:or other such solution.
