A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND,
INDIANA, COMMENDING THE SOUTH BEND CLINIC AND SURGICENTER ON
ITS 75TH ANNIVERSARY
WHEREAS, the Common Council notes that in 1916, Dr. Walter Baker, Dr.
Edwin Lent, Dr. Charles Terry, Dr. Robert Shanklin, Dr. Charles E. Hansen, Dr. Hugh
Miller, and Dr. Fred R. Clapp founded the South Bend Clinic; and
WHEREAS, these seven doctors established a unique style of medical care by
bringing together medical specialists to practice together as a group; and
WHEREAS, the South Bend Clinic is the oldest group practice of physicians in
Indiana, and was the first free standing ambulatory surgery center in Northern Indiana; and
WHEREAS, many medical advances have taken place at the clinic including the
first use of penicillin in this community by Dr. Frank Scott, and polio vaccine field trials
by Dr. G.Walter Erickson.
WHEREAS, today the South Bend Clinic and SurgiCenter has grown to 35
physicians and 211 staff members, who are all dedicated to providing dedicated and quality
medical care to the citizens of our community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, as follows:
SECTION I. The Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, on behalf
of all of its residents hereby publicly commends and salutes the South Bend Clinic and
SurgiCenter on its 75th Anniversary of providing quality medical care to our community.
SECTION II. The South Bend Clinic and SurgiCenter is an excellent example of a
caring group of individuals who are meeting the many needs of our residents, by providing
after hour services, x -rays, lab and other testing services on site; as well as having over
75% of its physicians teaching at area hospitals.
SECTION III. This Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after its
adoption by the Common Council and approval by the Mayor.
