Gentlemen:
Your Ways and Means Committee after due cohsideration of proposed salaries
for officers and /or employees under salary ordinance No. 3161 ppoposed the
following changes:
Deputy 6ity Clerk ............... ..........................1800 toiTO'\ b 0 .O p
Probation Officer .......... ............................... 1800 to 1600
Health Officer -part time ... ............................... 1800 to 1600
General Street Foreman ..... ............................... 2080 to 2000
Clerk Street Dept. 1800 to 1500
Clerk -Board of Works and Safety ......... 1800 to 1900
Asst. Engineer(formerly Clerk) .... 1300 to 1800
Building Inspector ......... ............................... -- 12-G& \ S o 0
Clinic Nurse .............. ............................... 1300 to 1400
Clinic Inspector ........... ............................... 1300 to 1400
Your committee has taken into consideration the increasing cost of living;
the necessity of maintaining loyalty; providing proper compensation for
intelligence' training, and skill; as well as realizing that none of these
City employees are in line to receive any pension or unemployment insurance
or Federal Old Age benefits such as are payable by industries and /or the
Police and Fire Department to their employees. Although the cost of living
is rapidly approaching that of 1931, yet it is impossible in vied of the
lack of full economic recovery to more fully restore previous pay -cuts.
It will be noted that in a number of instances' one em.loyee is now perform-
ing the duties previously handled by t,:ro or more employees.
',7e recommend that no additional compensation be allowed other than by salaries
under this ordinance to any of the above employees and /or officers, but that
reimbursement for transportation be made, or transportation be furnished un-
der proper restrictions where necessary in the proper performance of their
duties to the City of South Bend.
