AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND ORDINANCE NO. 3058: - SAID ORDINANCE BEING
AN ORDINANCE PERTAINING TO ELECTRIC SIGNS IN THE CITY OF
SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
BE IT ORDAINED by the Common Council of the City of South Bend,
Indiana.
Section 1 - That section 809, paragraphs 1, 2 and 32 of Ordinance
# 3058, be amended to read as follows:
Electric signs, of all classes, shall be constructed, throughout,
of metal or other non - combustible material.
Sheet metal shall not be lighter than twenty eight (28) gauge,
U. S. standard, galvanized treated.
The frame work of electric signs shall be of rust resisting
angle iron or channel construction, braced and crossed- braced
with all parts rigidly joined and of sufficient strength to
withstand all stresses and pressure without deformation.
All signs exposed to the weather shall be provided with
drainage holes to prevent the collection of moisture.
Drainage holes shall not be larger than one half inch nor
smaller than one quarter inch, in diameter.
Glass used in the construction of letters or designs shall.
be securely held in place by proper clips and fastenings
and no such glass, except tubing, shall be greater than
eighteen inches, in any dimensionm
No glass faced signs shall be erected unless such faces be
of shatterproof glass or shall be covered with a guard of
wire mesh not coarser than one half inch mesh.
The size of such faces shall be limited to thirty inches,
square.
When shatterproof glass is used it shall bear a distinctive
mark by which it may be readily recognized.
Section 2 - That section S11, paragraphs ,2 and8, of Ordinance # 3058,
be amended to read as follows:
No gas tube sign, outline or high voltage sign or fixture
shall be erected, put in operation, or changed in any manner,
until a permit for same shall have been obtained from the
Building Department.
Such permit shall not be issued to any person or firm other
than those holding class "A" electrical licenses under the
Electrical Code of the City of South Bend, Indiana.
No gas tube, sign, outline or high voltage sign or fixture
shall be maintained by anyone other than holders of class
"A" elctrical licenses or their authorized employees.
Wires:- High tension conductors shall notN�be smaller than
# 14 B & S gauge, stranded type, of suitable insulation
for the voltage it *.`to carry.
Transformer leads.and other long runs must be supported
on approved insulators, not more than eighteen inches
apart.
Wires between electrodes must also be supported by approved
supports aat within six inches of the electrodes.

All high tension wires must be separated at least two inches
from each,other and two inches from the surface wired over.
9;,supports must be fastened securely.
Approved_;bushings $$hall be employed to protect wires
passing through walls or partitions of sign structure.
Class "C") or skeleton type signs shall have wires of the
primary circuit'or'c'ircuits enclosed in approved conduit,
metal armor or metal troughs and grounded to conform with
grounding requiremefits of,the general electric code.
Section 3 - That section MiA, paragraphs 5 and 71 of Ordinance
# 3058, be amended to read as'follows:
Fee for yearly permit .shall be one dollar ($1.00) for any
projecting sign, for which an erection permit is required,
where the area of display face is less than twenty square
feet and two dollars ($2.Qa:)'�,,for signs having twenty
square feet or more�of display face.

In violation of this Ordinance or any part 6hereof, the
person, shall, upoiPconvictidn, pay a fine of not less
than five dollars (*5.00) „nor more than fifty dollars ($50.00)
for each offense or-'be sentenced to not more than thirty
130) days in jail or both, at the discretion of the Court
Section 4 -
This ordinance to be in full force and effect from and
after its passage by the City Council, legal publication,
public hearing and signature by the Mayor.
