Downtown for the Holidays Events Begin Friday Evening
SOUTH BEND, Indiana – The South Bend Parks & Recreation Department’s annual
th
“Downtown for the Holidays” events begin this Friday (Dec. 5), with the tree lighting
on Jon Hunt Plaza, starting at 5:30 p.m. Children from Starz Academy will perform, and
the youth artists who created the Greeting Cards will be recognized. Santa will arrive
on a fire truck to help light the tree.
Festivities continue Saturday morning with “Breakfast with Santa” at the Newman
Center, beginning at 8:00 a.m. Jetta & the Jellybeans will perform, there will be face
painting, and balloon artists, and of course Santa.
Tea with Santa is Saturday afternoon at the Erksine Golf Course clubhouse, with sittings
at 12n & 1:15 p.m. This is a more elegant affair, and is always popular.
The events wind up Sunday afternoon with the Holiday Skating Party at the Howard
Park Ice Rink, beginning at 4:00 p.m. Admission is two pet food items, which will be
donated to South Bend Animal Control. They will be on site for this, with a few furry
friends, and Santa will be there talking last minute requests from the children.
The South Bend Parks & Recreation Department has been coordinating this annual
event for well over twenty years. It is the areas longest running family holiday
celebration. The Howard Park Ice Rink is also celebrating fifty years of providing family
entertainment.
