Presented by me to the Mayor of the City of South Bend, Indiana October 15, Approved and signed by me 66l i</ Clerk Mayor RESOLUTION NO. �416 -% A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, DECLARING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH IN THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND 'DVbgrteg, the 1996 National Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign theme for 1996 is "Knowledge; It's Part of the Cure"; and 'OVbtrtas, the Common Council acknowledges that the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Breast Cancer Resource Committee (BCRC) have joined forces to promote the availability of accurate and up -to -date breast cancer information; and Vi grtgg, the Common Council lends its support to continued breast cancer education programs to enable the United States to reach the "healthy people goal" of mammogram screening for 60% of all women ages 50 and older, and UbtrtSS, the Council acknowledges that "Sister -Girl" was held on Thursday, October 10, 1996 at the Bendix Theater sponsored by the Cancer Society of St. Joseph County and United Health Services featuring Brandyn Barbara Ards an actress, playwright and breast cancer survivor which takes the audience using narrative, song and dance through her journey with breast cancer and her ultimate triumph - -- survival; and VbtrtO -0, the Common Council acknowledges the "Community Screening Mammogram Program" taking place from October 1, 1996 through November 8, 1996 which is sponsored by the Cancer Society of St. Joseph County at United Health Services, St. Joseph's Medical Center, Memorial Hospital, St. Joseph Community Hospital, St. Mary Community Hospital, Radiology, Inc., X -Ray Consultants, and the South Bend Clinic which provides eligible women the opportunity to purchase a $35 certificate for a screening mammogram and upon proof of low income eligibilty a certificate for $5. Ad), ZntrdOrt, Vt It ®rbeftttb by the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, as follows: Section L The Common Council of the City of South Bend hereby declares the month of October 1996 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in South Bend, Indiana. Section H. The Common Council encourages breast cancer in mammogram outreach educational efforts for all women and in particular African- American women who have the highest mortality and lowest survival rates for breast cancer. Section III. The South Bend Common Council congratulates all of the local participants sponsoring the "Community Screening Mammogram Program" taking place from October 1, 1996 through November 8, 1996 and encourages all residents of the City of South Bend to encourage eligible women to participate in this important program Section IV, This Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after its adoption by the Common Council and approval by the Mayor.
