STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND INTENT Whereas, the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend & St. Joseph County has petitioned for the designation of the following described real estate as an Historic Landmark Ordinance No. 5565-73, as amended to wit: Lot 3 Cushing's First Addition Whereas the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend & St. Joseph County has recommended the designation of the PROPERTY as an historic landmark. BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA: Section 1. That the above described PROPERTY be, and it is here designated and established as an Historic Landmark under Ordinance No. 5565-73, as amended. Section 2. The purpose of this ordinance is to establish the property at 614 North Sherman Street as an Historic Landmark. The described real estate is the lot 3 Cushing's First Addition. The Historic Preservation Commission has recommended designation of this property to the Common Council at the Commissions public hearing on May 17, 1999. A copy of the StafFs favorable review and recommendation regarding designation of this property is also enclosed. It is described as being lot 3 of Cushing's First Addition to South Bend. In 1915 Robert and Ida Greening purchased the lot from Joseph and Matilda Micholson. They immediately hired Austin and Shambleau to design this Prairie Style house which was completed in 1916. Mr. Greening owned his own business at 1019 Lincolnway West, selling and contracting wall paper, paints, painting and decorating. Robert SZ Ida Greening sold the house to Louis 8L Exa Greening on July 12, 1949. Exa Greening and Betty Ann Daugherty purchased it on November 25, 1952. The house was then re-sold to Exa Greening - Bolard on October 26, 1954. Another sale on November 27, 1956 placed the house in the ownership of Harold and Donald Meadow, who then sold it to Lloyd and Dorothy Stites on June 12, 1961. Dorothy Stites sold it to David Babbitt on February 16, 1996 and he then sold the house to Rosa Gonzalez on January 28, 1999. ARCH ITECTII RAL DESCRIPTION This is a two story Prairie Style house with a stone foundation and chimney. The roof is hipped with a front central dormer, wide soffit overhangs and is covered with asphalt shingles. The first story walls are clapboard up to a band course which divides the fist and second floors, above which is wood shingle siding. The house boasts a full width front porch with a hipped roof, stone rubble pier supports and rail, concrete floor, flat arch wood lintel and concrete steps. The house also has a side entrance that is accessed by concrete steps and metal rail. The windows are one over one double hung with simple hoods and aluminum storms. The side door is of the modern metal variety with a single small diamond window at the top. However, the front door is made of wood with a long central window from top to bottom and is protected by a wood storm door. E ~..:5.,. ash ?.:~. _d.b eY ~.~ ~~:. ~~'"'~~ 2 ~ 19~ RECOMMENDATION Based on the Historic Preservation Commission's Local Landmark Criteria's adopted by the Common Council, the building at 614 Sherman has been recommended to the Common Council for designation as a Local Landmark by Historic Preservation Commission. The building meets the criteria in at least three areas: 1.) Its embodiment of elements of architectural design, detail, materials, or craftsmanship which represents an architectural characteristics or innovations. 2.) Its suitability for preservation. 3.) Its identification with the life of a person or persons of historical significance. The building fulfills criteria #1 as an excellent example of an early Twentieth Century Prairie Style house. The building is rated a Significant 11 in the Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Inventory. The building fulfills criteria #2 by the integrity of its original construction with little alteration to the facade. The building is a wonderful example of the popular American Prairie Style. The building fulfills criteria #3 by its association with the prominent South Bend architects, Austin & Shambleau, and prominent local business owner, Robert Greening.
