A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA,
DECLARING THE WEEK OF MARCH 23 — 31, 2015 AS
FARMWORKER AWARENESS WEEK IN SOUTH BEND, INDIANA
the South Bend Common Council notes that Farmworkers Awareness Week is a week of action to
raise awareness about farmworker issues in our communities; and
this year marks the 16th Annual Farmworker Awareness Week which provides opportunities to
learn about the farmworker conditions and to honor their important contributions to society; and
6W� 85% of our fruits and vegetables are handpicked by an estimated two million men, women and
children working in farm fields throughout the United States which the Fair Labor Standards Act being amended
in 1978 to require minimum wages for farmworkers on large farms only; and
6%am� this year Farmworker Awareness Week coincides with the birthday of Cesar Chavez's birthday on
March 31 st. who dedicated himself to non - violent organizing for just wages, safer working conditions and dignity
for the men, women and children who toil in the fields, with Indiana farms employing over 39,000 seasonal and
migrant farmworkers who contribute to the agricultural industry of our state.
Section I. On behalf of the residents of the City of South Bend, the South Bend Common Council is proud
to honor all of the thousands of men, women and children who plant, cultivate, harvest and process our agricultural
products throughout the State of Indiana and throughout the United States.
Section II. The Common Council hereby declares the week of March 23 — 31, 2015 as Farmworkers
Awareness Week in South Bend, Indiana, and calls upon everyone to reflect upon the tireless efforts of Cesar
Chavez whose dedication and commitment to raise awareness has helped bring justice to those who toil in the
fields on all of our behalves.
Section III. The Common Council believes that as this 16th annua orkers Awareness Week is
