With warmer weather on the way and South Bend's 150th anniversary to be celebrated in May, the season arrives with great excitement. Changing clocks also serves as a reminder to change batteries in your smoke detectors. Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are two of the most important safety items in your home, and it's extremely important to maintain these devices. Proper lighting is also a critical element of public safety and where residents asked for more lights, we listened. Light Up South Bend grew out of community meetings held by the Council's Residential Neighborhood Committee, chaired by Karen White (D -At Large) and Common Council President Tim Scott (D -1st). In 2014, Light Up South Bend, in conjunction with Indiana Michigan Power, brought more streetlights to the LaSalle Park and Keller Park neighborhoods and to the area bordered by Michigan and Miami Streets to the west and east, and Indiana and Donmoyer Avenues to the north and south. This spring, in conjunction with the Department of Public Works, the City has announced the expansion of the Light Up South Bend program through the Lamppost Lighting Project. For a $250 fee, the City will provide installation of a lamppost in a South Bend homeowner's front yard. Residents will incur extra fees if wiring in excess of 50 feet is required, or a nearby power hookup is not available. As part of the Lamppost Lighting Project, residents may choose one of three designs, with black or rustic bronze colors available. Each lamppost has a sensor to turn the light on in the evening and off in the morning. Once installed, residents assume maintenance responsibility for the lamppost, including replacement of lightbulbs. There are a limited number of lampposts available and residents will be accepted on a first -come, first - served basis. As South Bend's anniversary commemorations continue, the South Bend 150 committee invites any interested organization to become a Celebration Partner.
