May - June 2014 Newsletterl SOUTH P PCE/A. i May - June 2014 Dear Neighbor, BEND As spring gets into full swing, the City reminds residents that plastic bags are no longer permitted for yard waste collections. A City ordinance prohibiting the use of plastic bags for yard waste went into effect January 1, 2014. Plastic bags created environmental problems at the City's organic resources center, costing taxpayers thousands of extra dollars. According to the ordinance, yard waste for pickup must be placed in a biodegradable paper bag or other container approved by the City and separated from other garbage. Individual bags or containers may weigh no more than 35 pounds. Residents may also rent a container from the city for a yearly fee of $16. Residents can sign up for a 96 -gallon container labeled "Yard Waste Only." The City - provided container will not be subject to the 35 -pound weight limit. To sign up for a yard waste container, please call the City's customer - service line, 311. The City began collecting yard waste the week of April 28 and will continue through mid - November. Yard waste is collected on the same day trash is picked up and must be at the curb by 6:00 am. The City also reminds residents that we're in the final stages of a mandatory water meter exchange program. We continue to attempt to contact residents who still need to have their meters replaced. To avoid possible interruption of water service, please do not delay. Schedule your meter exchange today by calling 574 -235 -5636.
