November - December 2014 NewsletterSOUTH November - December 2014 Dear Neighbor, T$8. , , BEND 1865 You may have noticed the changes downtown with the City's Smart Streets initiative well underway. William Street, from Washington Street to Western Avenue, is now a two -way street. Lafayette Street downtown will also soon become two -way, with new street trees added. Jefferson Boulevard in South Bend's East Bank Village neighborhood recently reopened as well with improvement work now complete. The project added new curbs, sidewalks, and trees. Jefferson Boulevard also now offers three lanes —two travel lanes and a center turn lane. On- street parking has also been added in addition to dedicated bike lanes. Smart Streets is an effort to improve how South Bend's streets contribute to safe, efficient transportation and the overall quality of life. Smart Streets projects utilize the complete streets philosophy, providing equal access to pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, and transit riders. More two -way streets downtown create a more coherent, navigable downtown, easier for residents to access businesses and safer for people walking and cycling. These improvements are part of creating an environment more conducive to economic development and improving the quality of life in South Bend. I also want to remind residents that the City's ReLeaf leaf collection program continues until Thursday, November 20. A map and a schedule of when and where collection will take place throughout the city may be found at southbendin.gov /government /service /releaf- leaf - pickup. To streamline the pick -up process, the Street Department asks that residents please rake leaves to the curb line but do not rake leaves into the street, as this will plug the street drains, which could cause flooding during rain. November is a time to give thanks and we have much to be thankful for in our community. I would like to express thanks on behalf of all South Bend residents to our police officers and firefighters, who deserve our gratitude year -round for the risks they take to keep us safe. It has been a year of growth and progress in South Bend. Thank you to everyone who has contributed —from City employees to business leaders and entrepreneurs to residents who have volunteered their time and resources to strengthen our community. I wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving. Sincerely, Mayor Pete South Bend Civic Theatre www.sbct.org 574 - 234 -1112 403 N.
