PUBLIC SAFETY HAS TO BE THE TOP PRIORITY
I would thank our public officials for what we see as a decrease in overall crime rates. However,
in analyzing the crime rates we see an increase in violent crimes. A November 20, 2014 Fox 28
news report stated that "...However, reports of aggravated assault are up 19%, rape is up
16%, and homicide is up 133%, without even this week's fatal stabbing of Douglas
Smallwood being factored in yet. If officially ruled a homicide, Smallwood's.killing will be
the city's 15th homicide of 2014."
As a city we must provide more investments in counseling, family therapy and other early
intervention efforts. Other cities who provide resources in prevention efforts see a decrease in
violent crimes. I am thankful for the seemingly decrease however our work is far from being
complete
