"Public Safety is still not a Priority..."
Lack of appropriate preparation has been consistent with the current political
representatives during this past year. Collectively we must focus on what is important.
Last week's initial snow storm proved to be what is in store for South Bend during the
winter of 2014. Although, we were given a week's notice it can be conceived that any
one city could be surprised with a major snowfall but once again we may have been
surprised with the major drop in temperature.
The people of South Bend has been dealing with pain for a number of years, and yet
again, with an alarming unemployment rate and increasing poverty rate the City's
administration has forgotten about the least of those who need the support of the
leadership. Temperatures were projected this past summer to be as brutal as the
temperatures from the winter of 2013 and with the increase of taxes, water, sewer, rates
and cost of living our most vulnerable, children and seniors, have gone unnoticed.
Starting now and throughout the winter it is imperative our city leadership ensures the
public that we will do all that is necessary to provide quality and adequate weather
amnesty.
I am calling on the Mayor to fund a weather amnesty project that is far reaching and
adequate by using all faith based resources, non-profits such as the South Bend
Homeless Shelter and Hope and city recreational facilities to promote a safe
environment for the residents of South Bend. The citizens of South Bend need to hear
of a plan announced as soon as possible so that we can make sure our residents,
regardless of income, will survive this winter.
