Let's Celebrate!
The City of South Bend is supporting the Diversity Purchasing Ordinance to promote business with
minority and women owned- businesses. We are happy to report that several businesses were
included in bids and some received awards. Below is a summary of minority and women owned -
businesses that recently worked with the city.
• Rental Uniform Bid: included 1 WBE in the bid process -BSE, Inc.(Griffith)
• Janitorial Bid: included 4 M /WBE's in the bid process and awarded 4 M /WBE's certain
product segments -HP Products (Indianapolis), Sanco Distribution (South Bend), Kabelin
Hardware (South Bend), North Meridian Hardware (Indianapolis)
• Solid Waste Hauling Bid: included 1 M /WBE in the bid process -Fanio Services (North
Liberty)
• Cleaning Services for Morris /Palais Bid: included 1 M /WBE in the bid process and also
awarded it to a M /WBE - Service Master of South Bend
• Snow Removal Bid: included 1 M /WBE in bid process and also awarded it to a M /WBE -Fanio
Services (North Liberty)
• Bowen Street Sidewalk Bid: included 1 M /WBE in bid process and also awarded it to a
M /WBE -Ortiz Concrete (South Bend)
City Involvement
The City of South Bend is proud to announce that it is reaching out to local minority and women
owned- businesses through its relationship with Notre Dame. MBA students embedded themselves
in a South Bend MBE to assist in technology development.
The City of South Bend also sponsored two tables at local award programs, NAACP lunch and La
Casa de Amistad dinner.
Moving forward...
The Diversity Compliance Officer presented information to the Public Works department regarding
the implementation of the Diversity Ordinance. In the near future, all of the City Departments will
be scheduled to review the Diversity Purchasing Ordinance and will develop reporting guidelines.
Diversity Utilization Board will receive training in January. The training will include topics such as
legal policies, data reporting, history of the ordinance, etc. All new board members will be required
to receive this training.
The Diversity Compliance Officer is initiating discussions with the majority vendors doing business
with the City to support their "good faith" efforts by submitting data regarding hiring and employing
minority and women staff.
