HomeMy WebLinkAboutSupporting the Funding for the Renovation of the Associates for Indian University South BendAttest: RESOLUTION 3403 -04 Passed by the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana December 13, 20 04 City Clerk Chief Deputy Clerk President of Common Council Presented by me to the Mayor of the City of South Bend, Indiana December 14, 20 04 Chief Deputy Clerk Approved and signed by me filar amhar 1L 20 04 . c City Clerk RESOLUTION NO. 3403 -04 A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, PUBLICLY SUPPORTING THE FUNDING FOR THE RENOVATION OF THE ASSOCIATES FOR INDIANA UNIVERSITY SOUTH BEND Wklmaa, the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, recognizes that Indiana University South Bend is the only public, comprehensive, master's and bachelor's degree granting institution of high education in northern Indiana; and W/w�read, the Common Council notes that IU South Bend currently has enrolled 7,501 students and is continuing to experience enrollment growth which is projected to continue; and lwk"Iaa, an expansion program at IU South Bend began ten years ago and is in need of state funding to complete the renovation of the Associates Building into the Indiana University South Bend Education and Arts Building so that it will continue to addressed challenges of the 215` century; and !�!� wlxe, , the Common Council acknowledges that an $27.8 million renovation request is being made in the 2005 -2007 biennium of the Indiana General Assembly and the Governor of Indiana, with this request being the only one for a single regional IU campus. ors G%L")6 e, tieWweao/irs , by the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, as follows: Section I. On behalf of all of the citizens of the City of South Bend, Indiana, the Common Council hereby publicly supports the funding request of IU South Bend for the renovation of the Associates Building; specifically noting that IU South Bend is the 9th largest employer in St. Joseph County and contributes over $60 million annually to our community's economy. Section II. The South Bend Common Council notes that the proposed renovation would be a more cost effective than building a new building, and would then be the home to three (3) schools at IU South Bend, namely the School of Education, Fine Arts from the Ernestine M. Raclin School of Arts, and the dental programs from the School of Nursing and Health Professions. Section III. The Council believes that if the funding request is approved, thai approximately 2,000 students would be able to use the renovated facility which would house high -tech classrooms, computer labs, conference rooms, a 130 -seat lecture hall, rehearsal rooms, photography lab, painting and drawing studios, video labs, dental hygiene clinics, patient consultation areas, and related offices.
