Common i
' South i d
NEWS RELEASE
Date: Tuesday, January 14, 2014, 10:00 a.m.
From: 2nd District Council Member Henry Davis, Jr. Contact: (574) 315-4112
Public Works &Property Vacation Committee Chairperson
Beek's Lake Site Added to National Superfund Priorities List
The health and public safety concerns voiced by the residents of the 2nd Councilmanic District in South
Bend have been heard!
The Beck's Lake Site has been added to the Superfund National Priority List, referenced as Docket ID
No. EPA — HQ- SFUND-2013-0196. It was added to the Superfund NPL based on the hazardous rank
score which was generated.
This listing follows the public hearing held in South Bend, in late August 2013 at the Charles Black Sr.
Recreation Center. At that hearing, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency representatives and health
officers were present to discuss the soil sample results of soils in the area. At least sixty-six (66) soil
samples were analyzed as part of their investigation.
The National Priorities List (NPL) is basically a list of the national priorities of known or threatened
releases of"hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants..." NPL serves as an "information and
management tool"which is part of the Superfund cleanup process.
"I'm elated that the federal government has taken notice of our corner of the nation. As the District
Representative, I am even more happy for the residents in the direct area of Beck's Lake/LaSalle Park,
because this concern has been met with resistance for decades. I will see that regular updates are
provided for residents. The remedial investigation may take a number of years, however the public will
have the opportunity for input during that time", says Davis.
For more information contact:
http://www.0a. og v/region5/cleanun/beckslake r
