As we head into fall, the South Bend Fire Department wants to remind residents that smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
are the best way keep family members safe in the event of a fire, or in the release of highly poisonous carbon monoxide gas.
In addition to changing batteries in the fall and spring, as we change our clocks, it's also a good time to check the age of your
alarms. They do wear out, so if you think your alarms are more than 10 years old, replace them with new ones.
The South Bend Fire Department received federal funding to provide a limited number of smoke and carbon monoxide
alarms to residents while supplies last. To have South Bend Fire install a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm —free of charge —
call Central Fire's main office at 235 -9255 between 8 am and 4:30 pm Monday through Friday.
The South Bend Police Department is currently taking applications for its fall Citizen's Police Academy. Established to
promote understanding of the South Bend Police Department's policies and procedures, the Academy provides training in
all aspects of law enforcement that Officers face on a daily basis.
The Citizen's Police Academy is a nine -week program, beginning in September, with classes on Tuesday nights from 6 -8:30
pm. Residents must be 18 years old to participate, have no prior felony convictions, and are subject to criminal history check.

It's also a great time of year for residents to become mentors. The Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Joseph County
(wwwbbbs- sjc.org or 232 -9958) and the South Bend Education Foundation's Mentoring Program
( http: / /www.edfo.org /mentors.htm or 283 -8072) deserve our community's support for the great work they do to help our

The fall marks budget season here in the City. The budget for fiscal year 2015 stands as a statement of our common purpose.
I want to especially thank the Common Council for its input on budget priorities and know we will have robust dialogue in
the weeks ahead to further clarify our primary areas of concern.
The budget's top priority remains the same: making sure that South Bend is an open and safe community where everyone
can thrive. South Bend's comeback is now well underway with momentum that will carry us into 2015. In the first half this
year, our Department of Community Investment announced 19 major economic development projects, bringing with them
1,287 jobs, and $173 million in private investment. But it's still not enough, and we're endeavoring to do more.
We're changing the way we do business, embracing what our residents want and working together to become stronger than
ever before. An exciting future lies ahead.
