Classes in South Bend Community Schools begin August 20. Please remember to take extra precautions in designated school zones. All 50 states have a law making it illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children. Also, traffic in both directions are required to stop when students are entering or exiting a school bus. We thank all those throughout the community who help ensure the safety of our children, and look forward to a smooth transition back to school. Before focus shifts to back -to- school activities and the fun that fall offers, I encourage you take advantage of all the fun summer events around South Bend. Attendance at Four Winds Field at Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium continues to climb. Efforts to foster a more family - friendly atmosphere have improved the fan experience at Four Winds Field, from pony rides and a petting zoo to the splash pad and inflatable playground. Also, mark your calendars for Art Beat 2014, on Saturday, August 16 from noon -8 pm. It's a showcase of over 200 visual, performing, and culinary artists from South Bend and the surrounding region. Residents are encouraged to stroll downtown streets during this free, family - friendly event. The Michiana Military Stand Down for Veterans aims to fill basic needs —and honor veterans —at an event on Thursday, September 25 from 10 am -2 pm on the grassy area between Four Winds Field and the Veterans Affairs Clinic on Western Avenue. Everyone is welcome to join the opening ceremonies at 10 am, when the Miller's Vets group will present the colors. The event will offer assistance to veterans, including free screenings of glucose levels, blood pressure and foot issues, plus information on AIDS testing and help for quitting tobacco. Attorneys will be on hand to assist with access to free legal help. Organizations will offer help with employment, housing assistance, educational opportunities, and mental health services. And volunteers will offer clothing to those in need. I hope everyone has had a wonderful summer and look forward to seeing you around the City in the weeks to come. Attempts are ongoing to contact residents who still need to have their meters replaced. To avoid possible interruption of water service, please do not delay. This academic year, South Bend Community Schools will participate in a new program called Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) which provides a free healthy breakfast and lunch daily for ALL children in preschool through grade 4, at ALL primary centers and Henry Studebaker Elementary School. To obtain free meals, no action is required. However, students in primary centers still need to complete the "Textbook and Other Benefits" application to determine eligibility for free textbooks. If this application is not received, families will be responsible for paying textbook fees. The application is available at all schools or online at https: / /fsapp.sbcsc.kl2.in.us /textbooks. Students in grades 5 through 12 are also eligible for breakfast and lunch at no charge, but families will need to complete the "Meal and Textbook" application to determine eligibility.
