AN ORDINANCE AMENDING SECTION 4 OF CHAPTER
26 OF ORDINANCE 3709 TO PROVIDE FOR THE
RATES OF-FARE FOR TAXICABS,
BE IT ORDAINED by the Common Council of the City of South
Bend, Indiana, that Section 4 of Chapter 26 of Ordinance 3709 be
amended to read as follows:
RATES OF FARE
The rates of fare charged by the owner of any taxi -
cab shall be as follows:
For the first 1/4 mile or fraction
thereof 40�
For each succeeding 1/4 mile
thereafter 50
Providing that a taxicab may be hired at the rate
of $3.00 per hour for driving within the city when so
hired before the trip is begun; provided, further,
that for each four minutes of waiting time there may be
a charge of 200. Waiting time shall include the time
when the taxicab is not in motion, beginning at its
arrival at the place to which it has been called, or
the time consummed while standing at the direction of
the passenger, but no charge shall be made for time
lost because of the inefficiency of the taxicab or
its driver, or time consummed by premature response
to a call.
The above charges shall be for one or more persons.

Each licensed and operating taxicab shall contain
a printed notice within said cab so as to be clearly
visible to the passengers riding in said cab, stating
"Pay Only Fare Shown on Meter ", or words having a
similar import.
This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and
after.its passage by the Common Council, approval by the mayor
and legal publication; and upon taking effect, all ordinances, or
Parts of ordinances that are in conflict with this amendment are
hereby expressly repealed.

TO THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA
The undersigned duly licensed owners and operators of taxis
cabs in the City of South Bend respectfully petition for a raise
in taxicab rates from the present level of
to
thirty (30�) cents for the first one - fourth (1/4)
mile, and five (50) cents for each one - fourth (1/4)
mile thereafter
thirty (300) cents for the first one -fifth (1/5)
mile, and five (5¢) cents for each one -fifth (1/5)
mile thereafter.
We would respectfully show as follows:
1. The present taxicab rates in South Bend are lesser
than the prevailing taxicab rates in cities of comparable size and
economic situation.
2. They are not sufficient to enable the drivers of said
taxicabs to earn a living wage.
3. They are not sufficient to enable the owners and
operators of taxicabs to earn a profit upon their investment and
thus permit them to remain in business.
4. The undersigned constitute / P of the owners and
operators' certificates out of /19- which are issued.
