SUBJECT: Downtown Furniture Repair/ Replacement
Over the past decade, downtown furniture and fixtures have been acquired which
provide a cohesive look and feel to the downtown experience. During this time, DTSB
has maintained the items by making minor repairs, painting, cleaning, removing graffiti
and stickers, etc.
After this brutal winter especially, some of the fixtures have been severely damaged or
are missing altogether, with others needing replacement parts and repairs.
DTSB has compiled a list of these needs in the attached memo, totaling $11,883.60.
This cost is for the parts or items only, with DTSB having them installed / repaired.
Staff requests approval of this funding request from the SBCDA, to repair or replace the
listed downtown furniture and fixtures.

RE: Repair /Replacement Downtown Street Furniture
This past winter, in particular, was especially harsh on downtown's outdoor furniture. A combination of the
elements, snow plow damage and vehicular accidents expedited typical life cycles. DTSB would like to take
the lead on repairing and replacing the missing or damaged items. The administration and implementation of
this plan would not involve any additional costs beyond reimbursement for expenses related to physical
replacement parts or units.
Street furniture, inclusive of benches, trash receptacles, flower pots, and bicycle racks, has been a welcome
and integral part of the downtown streetscaping. It provides a hospitable, functional and cohesive sense of
place throughout the district. Since initial installation in 2008, Downtown South Bend, Inc. (DTSB) has
assumed responsibility for the on -going maintenance of these items — including, but not limited to minor
repairs of moving parts, painting, eliminating rust, cleaning/power washing, and removing graffiti/stickers.
Overall, these items have worn well. Nonetheless, there is a natural lifecycle to these items, some of which
is expedited through vandalism, theft, accidental damage, or other unavoidable circumstances.
An ongoing inventory of these items by our Ambassador Team reveals the following current situation, which
has been coupled with recent quotes for total repair /replacement (pictures follow on the next page):
