HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-16-08 Community RelationsCOMMUNITY RELATIONS COMMITTEE The September 16, 2008 meeting of the Community Relations Committee of the South Bend Common Council was called to order by its Chairperson, Henry Davis, Jr. at 5:10 p.m. in the Council's Informal Meeting Room. Persons in attendance included: Karen L .White, Ann Puzzello, Tim Rouse, Mayor Luecke, Gary Gilot, Mary Ann Myers, Mikki Dobski, John Voorde, City Clerk AGENDA: 2008 TACT CONFERENCE (OCTOBER 12-15) SOUTH BEND. INDIANA Chairman Davis began by describing the mission of his committee as one which oversees the various activities of the Office of Community Affairs and is charged with facilitating partnerships and ongoing communications with other public and private entities operating within the City. Councilmember Henry Davis went on to indicate he had initiated discussions with Mikki Dobski a couple of weeks back to see how the Council might play a part in the upcoming TACT Conference in South Bend. He said the Council wanted to provide a helping hand to host the conference. At this point he turned to Mikki Dobski to outline the Administrations work on the Conference so far. Mikki explained that each time the city hosted a conference the focus was on a new facility ie) Hall of Fame, Coveleski, Century Center. This time the Studebaker Museum was to be showcased Sunday, October 12, would feature a welcome party at the Museum with snacks, beverages, and music by McPherson and the Struts. President Rouse interjected that he had decided to cancel the October 13th meeting to allow Council Members to participate in the conference. Mary Ann Myers said Council participation was welcome and she would be providing sign-up sheets for various volunteer time slots. Mikki then asked Gary Gilot to describe the two concurrent mobile workshops he and Jeff Gibney would be providing. Gary's will focus on environmental issues highlighting South Bend's progress on Storm/Sanitary Sewer separation and on partnering with Notre Dame to warm the greenhouses. Jeff Gibney will emphasize public-private partnerships and planning to boost economic development. The Mayor expressed appreciation to Councilmember Henry Davis, Jr. and the Council for their willingness to help. Councilmember Henry Davis, Jr. then asked that the handouts brought by Mikki be copied and placed in Councilmember's mailboxes. Under miscellaneous Councilmember Henry Davis, Jr. noted his success in getting Burkhart Outdoor Advertising to dedicate to west side billboard to honor Olympian Leroy Dickson and Skylar Diggins from Washington High School for her efforts with the U.S. Women's Basketball Team.
