AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND ORDINANCE NO. 3913
(AS AMENDED)
(ELECTRICAL INSPECTION)
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH
BEND, INDIANA:
SECTION I. That Section 5 of said ordinance be amended in the
following manner:
Section 5. Electrical Examining Board Created,
be completely deleted and the following Section be
adopted:
SECTION 5. ELECTRICAL EXAMINING BOARD
CREATED.
There is hereby created an Electrical Examining Board
of the City of South Bend, hereinafter designated as the
"Board ", which shall consist of one (1) Class A Electrical
Contractor, one (1) Jaurneyman electrician, one (1)
Member of the City Council, one (1) professional engineer,
and the Chief Electrical Inspector who shall be Chairman
of the Board.
All members, except the Chief Electrical Inspector, shall
serve for a term of one year. All members of said Board
shall be appointed by the Mayor, and the Chief Electrical
Inspector shall remain on said Board until such time that
he may resign or be replaced by the Mayor.
All members except the Chief Electrical Inspector shall
receive Ten ($10. 00) Dollars for each day during which
he has attended a meeting of the Board.
The Board shall keep a record of all examinations and shall
have printed a manual of its rules and regulations for the
conduct of examinations. Each applicant shall have the
right to review his examination papers upon request.
SECTION H. That Section 7 of said ordinance shall be amended in the
following manner:
SECTION T. STANDARDS FOR THE INSTALLATION OF
ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT.
That immediately following the last paragraph of said
Section 7 shall be added the following paragraph:
Thin wall conduit cannot be used when exposed to weather,
or in wet locations.
All services installed in one story, no basement type houses
must be located in gable end of building.

That Section 9 of said ordinance shall be amended to
read as follows:
SECTION 9. CLASSES OF LICENSES.
CLASS "D" - Dealer's License.
Authorizing the sale of (Underwriters Laboratories,
Inc.) approved electrical devices, apparatus or appliances
designed for the attachment to or installation on any
electrical circuit or system for light, heat or power,
consuming 500 watts or more.
That Section 12 of said ordinance shall be amended to
read as follows:
SECTION 12. EXAMINATIONS.
That immediately following the last paragraph of
Section 12, shall be added the following:
Applicant must secure license within thirty (30) days
after passing examination.
That Section 17 of said ordinance shall be amended to
read as follows:
SECTION 17. FEES FOR PERMITS AND INSPECTIONS.
That immediately following subparagraph H shall be
added the following:
I. All services of 800 amperes or larger shall be of the
cubical type and shall be housed in an enclosure containing
only electrical equipment and proper working space.
Circuit breaker enclosures or fusible equipment with
provisions for, or space for more than six (6) circuit
breakers; switches or pull outs used as disconnecting
means shall not be approved as service entrance equip-
ment, unless there is permanently installed main circuit
breaker, switch or pull out which will disconnect all the
breakers, or fuses, or sub -lugs which may be mounted in
the cabinet. The disconnecting means, in all cases, must
be of a type approved for this purpose.
All services of 70 amperes or greater installed, must have
main line disconnect.

SECTION VI. That Section 19 of said ordinance shall be amended
to read as follows:
SECTION 19. CONNECTIONS TO INSTALLATIONS.
That the last sentence of said paragraph shall be
amended to read as follows:
All services that have been disconnected, or an
instance where a building has been vacated, service
must be disconnected and shall not be re- connected
until approval is issued by the Electrical Inspector.
All feeders to panels must have copper size corres-
ponding to name plate rating of panel. All fuse panels
must have non - tamperable fuses. No approval will be
given on electrical work done in new public buildings
unless prints and specifications are submitted to this
office before work is started.
SECTION VII. This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and
after its passage by the Common Council, its approval by
the Mayor and the fulfillment of all statutory requirements
relating thereto.
