for new animal shelter
Launch of fundraising campaign for new facility
South Bend, October 10, 2008 —
Christopher B. Burke Engineering, LTD. (CBBEL) and the
Community Animal Rescue Effort of South Bend (CARE of South Bend) announced plans to
partner for the launch of the official fundraising campaign for the new South Bend Animal Care
and Control (SBACC) facility.
On October 18, 2007, the city of South Bend announced that it was investing in plans for a new
animal shelter. The current facility is a century-old building that was converted from a former
fire station in 1996. The new facility would be part of a renovated and expanded facility to be
located at 521 Eclipse Place on South Bend’s West Side.
Unfortunately, funding for this project isn’t as certain as it once was. Due to the impact on
revenues of HEA 1001, municipal funding for the construction of the new shelter is uncertain.
Therefore, in June of 2008 a group of concerned citizens came together to incorporate the
Community Animal Rescue Effort of South Bend. CARE if South Bend is a 501(c)3
organization whose mission is to support SBACC through fundraising initiatives. Currently, the
exclusive focus of CARE is to raise the necessary funds to ensure construction of the new
facility.
In order to build support for this fundraising campaign, CBBEL has generously granted CARE
of South Bend exhibit space at the upcoming Indiana Association of Cities and Towns (IACT)
convention. This year’s IACT convention will take place at South Bend’s Century Center
