South Bend provides emergency rescue training for
firefighters and officials from Guatemala
The South Bend Fire Department, in collaboration with “Hearts in Motion” is providing
Swift Water Rescue Training for seven firefighters from Guatemala. This year, two Guatemalan
government officials, who will observe the training procedures, will accompany the firefighters.
The team will be in South Bend for two days. The purpose of the trip is to provide basic swift
water rescue training.
The training will include self-survival training and is very important due to the severity of
earthquakes, floods, and other conditions encountered in Guatemala. The trainees will then take
this knowledge back to Guatemala to help with training there.
The crews will be on the East Race and the river Tuesday afternoon (1:30pm) and
Wednesday beginning at 9:00 am. Prior to working on scenarios on the river, there will be
classroom training and some work on-site at the East Race. The group is staying at Central Fire
Headquarters during the training.
