We're hoping the harsh winter weather has passed once and for all and that we're soon enjoying everything that spring
has to offer — including yard work. With that in mind, the administration reminds residents of the ordinance prohibiting
the use of plastic bags for yard waste collections that went into effect January 1.
Plastic bags containing yard waste create environmental problems at the City's organic resources center, costing taxpayers
thousands of extra dollars and prompting the City to institute the ban. According to the amended ordinance, yard waste
for pickup must be placed in a biodegradable paper bag or other container approved by the City and separated from other
garbage. Individual bags or containers may weigh no more than 35 pounds.
Residents may also rent a yard waste container from the city for $16 per season during the yard waste collection period
from April through November. The City - provided container will not be subject to the 35 -pound weight limit. To sign up
for a yard waste container, please call the City's customer - service line, 311.
We encourage residents to participate in the annual Rebuilding Together event on April 12. Established locally in 1989,
Rebuilding Together has rehabilitated 845 homes, saving residents $11 million in repairs. Work varies from yard clean -up
and trash removal to small carpentry jobs and painting to major skilled tasks such as roofing work and updating electrical
and plumbing systems. All repairs are completed at no cost to the homeowner.
This year's effort will take place on Saturday, April 12 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The organization will rehabilitate 21
homes in South Bend's Near Northwest and Lincoln Park neighborhoods. For information on how you or your group

Additionally, South Bend Parks and Recreation is establishing a five -year master plan to guide the development of
physical space and activities. The plan will establish direction to inform staff, advisory committees, and elected officials.
The City has been gathering information and feedback from residents during a four -month process. The plan will be
presented to the public and the Common Council in June. Residents are encouraged to continue to offer input by filling
out a survey online at sbpark.org.
The City also reminds residents that we're in the final stages of a mandatory water meter exchange program and
continues to attempt to contact residents who still need to have their meters replaced. To avoid possible interruption
of water service, please do not delay. Schedule your meter exchange today by calling 574 - 235 -5636.
