HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-19-08 Parks Director St. Clair Named Chairman of National School NEWS RELEASE September 19, 2008 Contact: Mark Bradley, Director of Marketing, 574.299.4768 ext. 240 Parks Director St. Clair Named Chairman of National School SOUTH BEND, Indiana – South Bend Parks & Recreation Department Director Phil St. Clair has been appointed as Chairman to the Board of Regents of the Charles J. Reitz Marketing and Revenue School. The school is an educational function of the National Recreation & Parks Association. The term of the appointment is for one year, with duties and responsibilities beginning in October. St. Clair and Parks & Recreation Director of Marketing Mark Bradley have each received certification in advanced studies from the school. The Reitz Marketing & Revenue School was established in 1980 in La Jolla, California, as a source of information on funding for Parks & Recreation professionals. It has since evolved into a nationally recognized forum in the industry. Instructors and speakers from a wide variety of professions both inside and outside of Parks & Recreation are recruited to participate. The Reitz School is recognized as a source for many of the current and modern trends in marketing and revenue management in the parks & recreation field. This year a Planning & Management Institute was added as a component to further solidify an already specialized curriculum. Phil St. Clair has served as the Director of the Parks & Recreation Department since January, 1993, with his appointment to the position by then Mayor Joe Kernan. Before that, St. Clair served as the Director of the Division of Equipment Services within the Public Works Department. The South Bend Parks & Recreation Department has been at the fore-front of the industry since 1993. Under St. Clair, the Department has opened the Belleville Softball Complex, the O’Brien Administrative Offices and Recreation Center, the O’Brien Skate Park, Southeast Park, and the new Maintenance Facility. Each of the afore-mentioned facilities has won recognition as a “Best Facility” by the Indiana Parks & Recreation Association. - more - The Department was also recognized for its marketing efforts in October, 2003, receiving the “Kudo’s Award” for Best Web Site Promoting Recreation. This national award is presented by the National Recreation & Parks Association to an agency that best promotes recreation and parks activities. The Department was accredited by the Commission for Accreditation of Parks & Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) in October of 2007. This distinction has been granted to just over seventy agencies across the nation, and places the South Bend Parks & Recreation Department in the top 1% of all agencies nationwide.
