HomeMy WebLinkAboutCommending Washington High School Wrestler Michael Bates 2014 IHSAA Wrestling State FinalsAttes RESOLUTION 4325 -14 Passed by the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana March 10, 14 20 Presented by me to the Mayor of the City of South Bend, Indiana March 11, 20 14 City Clerk dent of Common Council Approved and signed by me /14#P—(f+ ) 204 . w City Clerk in "' RESOLUTION NO. l 3 A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND PUBLICLY COMMENDING AND HONORING WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLER MICHAEL BATES FOR HIS ATHLETIC SHILLS AND DEDICATION IN REACHING THE 76TH ANNUAL STATE TOURNAMENT OF THE 2014 IHSAA WRESTLING STATE FINALS Off .w the South Bend Common Council notes that the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) was organized in 1903, and is charged with regulating and supervising interschool athletic activities among its member high schools as an integral part of the secondary educational program; and IACmze, the Common Council further notes that the 2014 IHSAA Wrestling State Finals were held in the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana, on February 21, 2014 and February 22, 2014; and the Council is proud to acknowledge that 170 -pound Michael Bates of South Bend Washington High School, who is coached by Washington Wrestling Coach Tony McWilliams, is a two -time Triple Crown Champion in the Indiana State Wrestling Association, which is a competition for club wrestlers in the off- season and is the former ISWA Folkstyle Nationals runner -up; and CAawi� Coach McWilliams, who has coached Michael Bates for the past 8 years, credits Michael for "rediscovering his passion for the sport of wrestling ", despite many personal challenges, which resulted in this high school senior finishing 4"h overall in his first appearance at the IHSAA State Tournament; 6X the Common Council is proud to acknowledge that: "The Michael Bates' story provides so many lessons for young athletes to learn, about the motivations they need to compete, the positive outlet that sports can provide, and what it takes to become the best at what they do. " Section I. The Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, honors Washington High School Senior Michael Bates for his "self- discovery and personal growth" as a person and wrestler, who, with the assistance of his Coach Tony McWilliams, was able to "unlock the passion which is contained within all of us and do something constructive with it" by taking responsibility to "...go out there and get better ". Section II. The South Bend Common Council is proud to recognize that under the lights of Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, 224 best high school wrestlers in the State of Indiana wrestled in front of nearly 10,000 spectators. One of these wrestlers, Washington High School Senior Michael Bates, bested Kaine Luginbill of Adams Central 10 -8 in overtime and Bennet Kempf of Evansville Mater Dei 6 -5; and eventually in overtime, Michael "gives it everything he has" and takes 4 1 place in his 1" IHSAA Wrestling State Finals. Section III. As noted in The Fan Varsity Sports Network: "Even though the wrestlers from northern Indiana were shut out of the top spot on the podium pyramid at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, their performance still inspires... it is the strength, dedication and passion of these athletes th /e§ to inspire massive crowds into a frenzy, year after year...."
