AN ORDINANCE APPROVING A CONTRACT BETWEEN
THE'WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT OF SOUTH
BEND, INDIANA, AND WORTHINGTON CORPORATION,
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, FOR LABOR AND PARTS
NECESSARY TO REPAIR A MODEL 42MC -1 WORTHING-
TON PUMP IN THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF $5,554.87.

BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA:
SECTION I: That the contract entered into between the Wastewater Treat-
ment Plant of South Bend, Indiana, and Worthington Corporation, on
October 7, 1968, pursuant to advertising and receipt -,of bids, for-labor
.and parts necessary to repair a Model 42MC -1 Worthington Pump in the
total amount of $5,554.87, is hereby approved and confirmed.
SECTION II: This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and
after its adoption and approval by the Mayor.

TO: Members of the Common Council
RE: Wastewater Treatment Plant Worthington Pump
The attached Ordinance is for the first major repair on one
of three pumps at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. This
particular pump had the greatest number of hours of use of
the three at the plant. The pumps are alternating with one
in operation, one on stand -by and one available for over-
hauling. The pump will pump up to 44 million gallons of
sewage per day and averaged 37 million gallons per day in
1967. The responsibility of the pump is to lift the sewage
from the lower wet well to the upper wet well. The sewage
then flows by gravity through the rest of the processing in
the plant.
When we first investigated this particular pump, the Worth-
ington man advised us major repairs were needed. This was
expected due to the use over an eleven year period. The
approximate cost for each pump new is around $45,000.
We have received only one bid, which is understandable, since
Worthington is the manufacturer of the pump and would do a
better and less expensive job cost wise. I might also point
out that other individuals bidding would have to purchase the
parts from Worthington, thereby causing their bids to be
higher.
