HomeMy WebLinkAboutProviding for the Creation of a Police Cadet ProgramORDINANCE No. 5164 -70 Passed by the Common Council of the City of South Bend, March 23, 1970 Presented by me to the Mayor of the City of South Bend, Approved and signed by March 24. __70 Clerk )f Common Council Clerk IDEAL PRESS ORDINANCE NO. 5164 -70 AN ORDINANCE PROVIDING FOR THE CREATION OF A POLICE CADET PROGRAM WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of the City of South Bend, Indiana, to encourage young men and women to pursue a career in law enforcement and to pursue such a curriculum in high school and college as will train them in such a career, and, WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of said city to provide for the education and training of a cadre of young men and women who will, by virtue of their special interest, and the extended and special education and training, become available and eligible in the future for application for appointment to the police force of the City of South Bend; and, WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of said city to provide opportunity to such persons to complement their further academic train- ing with part time practical working experience within the environment of the Police Department of the City of South Bend. BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA: SECTION I. There is hereby established in the City of South Bend, Indiana, a police cadet program. Applicants for appointment as police cadets must be able to meet all mental, moral and physical standards, (with exception of weight and age) as are required for ap- pointment to the Police Department of the City of South Bend. Partici- pation in the cadet program shall be contingent upon such persons achiev- ing and maintaining academic excellence in their educational curriculum and their strict adherence to the rules and regulations set forth for their conduct by the chief of police. SECTION II. Police cadets shall not be police officers, shall have no police powers of arrest and shall not be members of the police force of the City of South Bend. They shall serve under the jurisdiction of the chief of police who shall be responsible for their supervision and direction. They shall perform such duties, work such hours and wear such uniform as shall be directed by the chief of police.
