AN ORDINANCE APPROPRIATING $20,000.00 FROM THE
FEDERAL ASSISTANCE GRANT COMMONLY REFERRED TO
AS GENERAL REVENUE SHARING, FOR VARIOUS PUBLIC
PARK PROGRAMS TO BE ADMINISTERED BY THE CITY OF
SOUTH BEND THROUGH ITS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC PARKS.
WHEREAS, additional funds are needed by the Depart-
ment of Public Parks to administer certain Public Parks programs
and to insure the Departments ability to properly perform its
functions during the year of 1974.
NOW THEREFORE, be it ordained by the Common Council
of the City of South Bend as follows:
SECTION I. That the sum of $209000.00 is hereby
appropriated for the year of 1974 from the Federal Assistance
Grant Fund commonly known as the General revenue Sharing Trust
Fund. This appropriation is to be administered by the Depart-
ment of Public Parks and will be distributed as set forth below:
Program FA62 "Newman Recreation Center"

Services Contractual 251.0 Building Repairs $209000.00
Total FA62 $20,000.00
SECTION II. This Ordinance shall be in full force
and effect from and after its passage by the Common Council,
approval by the Mayor, and the fulfillment of all statutory
requirements for emergency appropriations.

Dear Mr. Nemeth:
The Board of Park Commissioners is requesting the Common Council
to approve the enclosed ordinance for the renovation of the Newman
Recreation Center.
The structure, built in 1928, is in dire need of roof repair.
Water leaking through the roof is ruining the ceiling, walls and
floors in the building. It is estimated that it will take
$20,000.00 to repair the roof.
The Newman Center houses the Recreation Department and also is
heavily used for all types of activities. Thousands of persons
use the center each year for basketball, volleyball, badminton,
rifle range, dancing, meeting space, photography, lapidary and
golf practice range.
In the future, the Park Department would like to request funds for
additional renovation of the structure since it is an important
part of our recreation program.
