CITY OF SOUTH BEND South Bend, Indiana 46601 Jerry J. Miller Mayor Rollin E. Farrand, Sr., P. E. Director, Public Works South Bend Common Council County -City Building South Bend, Indiana Gentlemen: Reply To: Department of Public Works January 8, 1974 There will be presented to you for first reading on January 14, 1974, an ordinance deferring the costs during the year 1974 of the operation of an environmental officer, 4 full time hourly employees and operational supplies totaling $59,602.00. The salaries involved in the ordinance are for one environmental officer who will check out trouble complaints and health complaints. His duties will also include supervision of the summer environmental clean -up program. There are included salaries for four full time employees who will be used on the "paper truck", which is the vehicle which empties the trash containers throughout the city, and the appliance pick -up truck. The latter vehicle does produce revenue, but it is impossible because of the short existence to determine the amount of revenue or whether it could even stand on its own revenue. We feel that while they are doing the same type of work, it would be a gross in- justice to saddle the Solid Waste department with these services while it must try to service on its own revenues during its infancy. We have also included appropriate operational supplies to cover expenses of these men and their equipment. If we can be of further assistance in answering questions, please contact Rollin Farrand, Director of the Department of Public Works. Very truly yours, Rollin E. Farrand, P.E.
