Re: Repair of South Bend Dam
As a part of South Bend's overall riverfront development, an inspection was
made during the week of June 24, 1974 of the South Bend Dam located on the
St. Joseph River between the Jefferson and Colfax Bridges.
As a result of this inspection it has been determined that the dam is in need
of certain repairs. The nature of these proposed repairs are twofold; first,
to arrest the spalling and general deterioration of the concrete surface of
the structure, and secondly to prevent the present flow of water beneath the
dam, a flow which has seriously undermined portions of the structure.
The Engineer's Estimate for these repairs, as prepared by Lawson & Associates,
is in the amount of $210,000.00. Of this amount, $100,000.00 has been secured
through the Department of Natural Resources of the State of Indiana's Flood
Control Revolving Fund, in the form of a 10 year loan. (This loan shall be
repaid through CCIF, at an interest rate of 1 %).
It is for the balance of these repair costs, $110,000.00, that we
approval of an appropriation from Revenue Sharing. These costs as
within the original estimate for this work, as outlined in the St.
Corridor Study, published and submitted to the Council in December
Your favorable consideration in this matter would be appreciated.
Very truly yours,
