AN ORDINANCE APPROPRIATING $40,000.00 FROM THE FEDERAL ASSISTANCE GRANT COMMONLY REFERRED TO AS GENERAL REVENUE SHARING, FOR VARIOUS PUBLIC SAFETY PROGRAMS, TO BE ADMINISTERED BY THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, THROUGH ITS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY. WHEREAS, additional funds are needed by the Department of Public Safety to administer certain Public Safety programs and to insure the Department's ability to properly perform its functions during the year of 1974. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the Common Council of the City of South Bend, as follows: SECTION I. That the sum of $40,000.00 is hereby appropriated for the year of 1974 from the Federal Assistance Grant Fund, commonly known as the General Revenue Sharing Fund. This appropriation is to be administered by the Department of Public Safety and will be distributed as set forth below: Program 68 "Building Demolition" Account Description Amount 260.0 Services Contractual Other Contractual Serv. 40,000.00 Total 68 401000.00 SECTION II. South Bend, Indiana 46601 Dear Mr. Nemeth: Re: Demolition Fund Revenue Sharing Request Reply To: August 7, 1974 As of July 17th, 1974 only $35,836,96 remained available for the Bureau of Substandard Buildings to use in their important demolition work on buildings which have deteriorated to the point that there is no longer any hope of rehabilitation. This amount still available breaks down as follows: Remaining Balance Model Cities Demolition Fund $16,288.92 Fund 77 19,548;04 TOTAL $35,836.96 A recent survey revealed approximately 250 structures which were in such bad condition that they should be considered potential units for demolition. The $35,836.96 remaining would only cover the cost of demolition of 45 of these 250 units based upon an average $800 cost. We are, through this revenue sharing request, requesting funds to cover the demolition of approximately 50 additional units at a cost of $40,000. We feel that with your cooperation, and this additional money, we will be able to more effectively stop the spread of deteriorated homes which troubles our city, and more effectively eliminate public safety hazards which exist in burnt out and abandoned buildings.
