Decker Mar. 4, 1975 SUBJECT: Revenue Sharing Funds to purchase two Street Sweepers Gentlemen; The Bureau of Streets places a high priority in their many functions to provide clean streets to our residents and motoring public. To provide this service depends greatly on the frequency of which a street is swept. Business districts and high traffic streets generate dirt at a much higher rate than do streets in our neighborhood residential areas. Because of this if we are to-maintain a clean City some streets require to be swept daily, some weekly, and some residential streets only once a month. We have mapped out a program that affords us this frequency but it requires an adequate number of sweepers on the street to complete it. We expect an average of 24 miles of sweeping per machine in an 8 hour shift sweeping in tandems. With the addition of two more sweepers we can expect an additional 48 curb miles of sweeping per day. It is easy to see how the additional mileage will increase the frequency a street is swept. On March the 3rd the Board of Public Works awarded the bid for two Elgin Pelican Street Sweepers to Ries Equipment Co. contingent upon Council approval of Revenue Sharing funds. The total bid for two sweepers equipped with GMC 3 -53 Diesel Engines is $52,800.00 Hopefully the Council will see fit to approve this request thus granting us the benefit of an early summer delivery of these machines.
