ORDINANCE NO. 5853 -75
AN ORDINANCE FIXING THE ANNUAL PAY OF
POLICEMEN FOR THE CALENDAR YEAR 1976.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, as follows:
SECTION 1. The annual pay of the officers and
members of the 'Police Department of the City of South Bend for
the year 1976, by rank, classification and service years, shall
be according to the 1976 Police Salary Schedule as follows:
(Here insert the 1976 Police Salary Schedule which
is attached to this ordinance.)
The first service year for a police officer commences
upon his being sworn in as a police officer. The police officer
shall obtain his second service year on the next succeeding first
day of January and shall advance one service year on each
successive first day of January until he attains the maximum
salary for the particular rank he may hold.
The maximum salary shall be the last salary listed
under each rank in the above schedule.
SECTION 2. (a) A person who has accumulated at
least 30 hours of credit from an accredited college or university
may enter the Police Department with the rank of Corporal and 0 -1
service years upon order of the Board of Safety.
(b) A person who has accumulated at least 60 hours
of credit from an accredited college or university may enter the
Police Department with the rank of Corporal and 1 -2 service years
upon order of the Board of Safety.
(c) A person who has accumulated at least 90 hours
of credit from an accredited college or university may enter the
Police Department with the rank of Corporal and 2 -3 service years
upon order of the Board of Safety.
(d) A person who has received a bachelor's degree
from an accredited college or university may enter the Police
Department with the rank of Corporal and 3 -4 service years upon
order of the Board of Safety.
(e) Each person qualifying under this section shall
advance one service year on the first day of January following
his being sworn in as a police officer and shall advance one
service year on each successive first day of January until he
attains the maximum salary for the particular rank he may hold.
(f) An officer who is a member of the force prior to
the effective date of this ordinance may be credited with one
service year for each 30 hours of credit which he has obtained
from an accredited college or university and may also be assigned
an appropriate rank upon order of the Board of Safety.
SECTION 3. Any individual officer receiving less than
a $300 salary increase above his salary as of December 31, 1975,
may be entitled to a salary schedule adjustment which shall be
established $300 above his December 31, 1975 salary. This salary
may be set by the Board of Safety prior to the first pay period
of 1976 and shall include night incentive, educational incentive
and hazard pay. This section shall not apply to those officers
in the lowest three ranks as of December 31, 1975. This
section is meant to insure a reward to individual officers for
longevity and experience on the police force.
SECTION 4. In addition to the foregoing annual pay,
the officers —and members of the Police Department shall receive
compensation for extra duty and special performance as follows:
(a) For time spent in court appearances and overtime
work as determined by the Chief of Police, $5.00 per hour. A
police officer requested to work overtime by the Police Chief
or his designee is automatically paid the $5.00 per hour.
(b) For personnel required to work on legal holidays,
$32.00 per holiday worked; this shall apply to the following
holidays and no others:
New Year's Day Fourth of July
Lincoln's Birthday Labor Day
Washington's Birthday Columbus Day
Good Friday Veteran's Day
Easter Sunday Thanksgiving
Memorial Day Christmas
(c) For night incentive and hazard pay, $300.00 per
year.
SECTION 5. The Common Council recommends that the
contribution to dependent hospitalization be increased by $84.00
per year.
SECTION 6. This ordinance shall be in force and
effect for the ca endar year commencing January 1, 1976, and
ending December 31, 1976.

AN ORDINANCE FIXING THE ANNUAL PAY OF
POLICEMEN FOR THE CALENDAR YEAR 1976.
Respectfully report that they have examined the matter and that in their opinion the Ordinance should be
recommended favorably to the Common Council, as amended:
Amend salary schedule to increase amounts by $16.00 for Corporal,
Technician Detective, Specialist Det. Serg., Sergeant, Lieutenant and
Captain.
Section 3 to be amended to read: Any individual officer receiving
less than a $300 salary increase above his salary as of December 31,
1975, may be entitled to a salary schedule adjustment which shall be
established $300 above his December 31, 1975 salary. This salary may
be set by the Board of Safety prior to the first pay period of 1976
