ORGANIZATION MEETING JANUARY 7, 1957
Be it remembered that the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, met in the Council Chambers of the City
Hall, Monday, January 7, 1957, at 7:35 P.M., Central Standard Time. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Edward
F. Voorde, who asked that the members stand for a moment of silent prayer. Mayor Voorde expressed his appreciation
for the fine cooperation he had received from the Common Council during the past year and asked that the same co-
operation be given during the ensuing year. Mayor Voorde stated that this meeting was called in conformance with
Article II, Section 21 of Chapter 2 of the Municipal Code of the City of South Bend, Indiana.
The following Councilmen were present: Councilmen -at -Large George W. Carr, Stanley C. Korpal, Albert Tellson; 1st
District Councilman Julius B. Christman, Jr.;2nd District Councilman Joseph T. Kroll; 3rd District Councilman Walter
Glass; 4th District Councilman William A. Hahn; 5th District Councilman Walter C. Erler; 6th District Councilman
Chester Muszynski.
Mayor Voorde announced that nominations for President of the Common Council were in order. Councilman Tellson
nominated Councilman Stanley C. Korpal for President. The nomination was seconded by Councilman Muszynski. Council-
man Hahn moved that the nominations be closed. Councilman Carr seconded the motion. Councilman Christman rose to
state he wished to nominate Councilman Erler. Thereupon, Councilman Hahn withdrew his motion and Councilman Carr
withdrew his second to the motion. Councilman Christman then nominated Councilman Erler for President. Councilman
Glass seconded the nomination. Councilman Muszynski moved that the nominations be closed. Councilman Carr seconded
the motion. Motion carried. A motion was made by Councilman Carr that the Council vote by sign. Councilman Mus-
zynski seconded the motion. Motion carried. Upon.roll call, Councilman Korpal received 6 votes (Councilman Carr,
Korpal, Tellson, Kroll, Hahn and Muszynski); Councilman Erler received 3 votes, (Councilmen Christman, Glass and
Erler). Upon the vote being announced, Councilman Kropal was declared duly elected President for the year 1957, and
presented the gavel by Mayor Voorde.
Presiden£ ZCorpal then announced that nominations for Vice President were in order. Councilman Kroll nominated Council,
man Hahn for` Vice President. Councilman Tellson seconded the nomination. Councilman Muszynski moved that the nomina-
tions be closed. Councilman Carr seconded the motion. Motion carried. Councilman Kroll moved that the Clerk be
instructed to cast a unanimous vote for Councilman Hahn for Vice President. Councilman Muszynski seconded the motion.
Motion carried.
President Korpal asked that a Special Committee be set up to work with the Urban Redevelopment Commission and the
Housing Commission. Councilman Muszynski moved that such a committee be appointed by President Korpal. Councilman
Carr seconded the motion. Motion carried. President Korpal named the following Special Committee as the Urban
Redevelopment and Housing Committee: Councilman Muszynski, Chairman, and Councilmen Erler, Hahn, Carr and Kroll.
There being no further business before the Council, Councilman Hahn moved for adjournment. Councilman Muszynski
seconded the motion. Motion carried and the Council adjourned at 7:55 P.M., Central Standard Time.
