Leeper Tennis Center Grand Re-Opening Friday
SOUTH BEND, Indiana -After many months of hard work and preparation, the Leeper
Tennis Center is once again ready for play! The re-opening takes place Friday, June 6t"
with a ribbon cutting ceremony lead by Mayor Stephen J. Luecke and Park Department
Executive Director Phil St. Clair at 4:00 p.m. at the center located at 837 N. Lafayette,
in west Leeper Park.
The facility originally opened in the 1920's with eight (8) clay surface courts. In 1968
the clay courts were replaced with fifteen (15) asphalt courts, due to the maintenance
costs of clay. This most recent renovation re-aligns the configuration to 14 asphalt
hard surface courts, adds new lighting and an improved seating area for tournament
play. The courts are now also sporting the new USTA ~~blue", as opposed to the familiar
green.
Leeper Tennis Center was the premier facility for tennis in the 1970's and 80's, and will
once again vie :; this position. The center has long been the site of many
tournaments, currently serving host to sixteen (10 high school, 4 USTA, 2 local Metro).
Approximately 500-700 kids participate in lessons at the center and they can start as
young as 3 years of age. The staff offers parents lessons, and they have the
opportunity to take lessons during the same time as their child. Drop in mixed doubles,
Pee Wee thru Jr. Elite, and USTA Team Tennis for kids are all offered as well.
