REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Be it Remembered that the- ,0omaron Council of-the City of South Bend, Indiana., met ii1 ti e Regular Session in the Council Chambers of the City Hall, Monday evening August 12th, 1935, at the hour of 7:45 o'clock P.M. All members present. President Hull presided. Councilman Chambers moved that the minutes of the last meeting and the special meeting be dispensed with. Councilman Kerner seconded the motion. Motion carried. COMMUNICATIONS: August 1, 1935 City Council; I am wondering if something can't be done with the cats in this city. I am kept busy all day trying to protect the birds. We have about eight cats to watch all day and why can't we have a tax on cats just like we have on dogs? Some folks have two or three cats. I hope something can be done about this. Mrs. George Heintzelman 1507 Marietta Street On motion of Councilman Fish, was referred to the Board of Public Safety. Councilman Rasmussen, seconded the motion_. Motion Carried. July 30, 1935 A petition having been filed by the proper officials of the City of South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana, in the matter of additional appropriations in the sum of $32150.00; and; This matter having been set for hearing on July 24th, at 9:30 A. Due to curtailment of Federal projects on the 15th of the month, and failure to ( Continued on page 316 ) resume them to date, this report is only for half of the month. Tom Martin, foreman Finished building a new smoke stack on the street department garage, built a new broom rack for use by the City, painted the doors on the street department garage and cinder house and did repaire work at the City Hall for the City Controller and the Board of Works. John Hipskind, foreman Graded and resurfaced on North Olive Street. Harry Zoss, foreman Cleaned and graded river bank east of Sample Bridge Axel Anderson, foreman Sidewalk repair and Erosion Control 6583 sq. feet of new sidewalk laid 994 lin. feet of new curb laid 56 sidewalk patches made 5 blocks of sidewalk raised or lowered 1205 sq. feet of basework laid on streets 5 lin. feet of retaining wall built 26 steps built 328 sq. feet of cement floor laid 109 lin. feet of river wall built 150 lin. feet of capping poured 9 alcove steps built 2 alcove seats built 9 alcove piers built 125 lin. feet of alcove wall built 40 sq. feet of alcove floor laid Robert Harris, foreman Graded and gravelled on Twyckenham Drive, Howard Street, and Corby Street, in the process of ppening.up .same. Tranberg, . foreman Paved one block with brick on Taylor Street, opened alley off Oakside Ave.between St. Joseph Street and Carroll Street, and removed old pavement off of Walnut Street and Western Ave. at site of elevation. Harry Newman, foreman Opening up street, grading and gravelling same on Pershing Street, Johnson Street, Brookgield Street, and Huey Street. COMMISSIONER OF STREETS SOUTH BEND INDIANA August 1, 1935 TO THE HONORABLE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND -THE CITY COUNCILr" CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA HONORABLE SIRS: The following is a report of work done by the Street and Sewer Departments during the, month of July. 240 loads of cinders in ruts and holes in streets and alleys :.. 72 paper cans emptied every morning 1571 blocks of streets cleaned by hand 2341 miles of streets (single curb line) cleaned by machine 1043 loads of sweepings taken to various dumps 153 holes in streets repaired with brick or hot asphalt 67 Utilities cuts in asphalt repaired 79 tons of scrap asphalt cooked and used on above 26 Utility cuts in brick pavement repaired 136 tons of Cold Pack Asphalt used to repair holes in streets 66 blocks of dirt streets dragged 310 blocks o)f dirt streets graded 94 blocks of dirt streets oiled Fire Stations, City Hall, etc., cleaned of refuse each week 1518 blocks of weeds out along curbs and sidewalks 543 dead animals taken to dump 50 emergency calls answered -( glass -, fallen trees, etc. ) 5 city dumps cleaned 71 loads of sewer dirt taken to dump 144 feet of main sewers dragged. 20 loads of sewer dirt taken to dump 29 main sewers repairgd 19 main sewers flushed 6 private sewers flushed 59 manholes cleaned 81 manholes repaired 364 catch basins cleaned 200 catch basins flushed 20 catch basins repaired 492 blocks of streets flushed 2176 danger lights placed 1248 large barricades placed 2755 small baricades placed Respectfully submitted, J.
