Be it Remembered that the Common Council of the City of South Bend, State of Indiana, met in the Regular Session in the Council Chambers in the City Hall, Monday evening,`June 13th, 19'2v at the Hour of 8 :05 o'clock P.' M.2 All zNz Members present.'President Nelson presided. The Minutes of the two previous meetings were read and on Motion of Councilman Hull were referred • to the Commitee on the Inspection and Supervision of Minutes.' Motion carried. COMMUNIOATIONM. City of South Bend Indiana Office of the Mayor William R: Hinkle Mayor_ June 13, 1932. Honorable Memaersr of Common Council , -:City of South Bend, Indiana.' Gentlemen: Referring to recent ordinances and resolutions passed by your honorable body which N1 effeck salaries and personnel of the different departments under the jurisdiction of the Board of Public Works, I wish to refer, herewith, a letter which I receiavdd from the Board of Publ c s, Works by its president, George A.' Schock, in which they state they are complying with the Council's recommendations and have adopted them with a few asap exceptions which are set forth in detai in the attached communication.' Hinkle, Nayor of the City of South Bend, South Bens Indiana.' • Dear Sir:- 'Pursuant to your request, we wish to advise that the Board has had under consi derat on since their enaoytments the ordinances and resolutions passed by the Common Counoilmof the Oit3. of South Bend which affect the salary and personnel of the different departments under our,. judrisdictiozi,'and we wish to advise that the Council's recommendations have been adopted with' the jollowaing exceptions:- he recommendations of the Common Council a was that we dispense with the services of f!�v men in the Engineering Department:' Through the assistance of Mr' Wray, weIhave been able to save the salary of six men im this particular department by staggering employment, and'unde-r t e- present arrangement, this department has but one clerk, one assistant engineer, anc od man. In the case of the rod man and assistant engineer, two men in each position are ke the payroll and they alternate, working two weeks on and two weeks off.' The recommendation of the Council was that a clerk be eliminated in the Board of Works: • We have gone into this matter very thoroughly, ad find that it is an impossibility for this office to be conducted by the Clerk,of the $card alone: We have, however, reduced r the salary x of the assistant clerk from $1206'00 to $1001',00 per month and trust that this change °will meet with your approval as well as the Council's:' f re erence to the Building Departe ! We have five men in this department whose cars are in use practically all the time, and it has been their experience that the life of a-oar is only about two years, in this, work: Under the above proaposal, these men agree to fur4ish and maintain their own cars.' All of the above changes, from the Council's recommendations, have been gone into in detai with the Council's Committee on Fees and salaries and have met with their unanimous approval.` Xe would therefore ask that if you agree with these changes, that the Common Council be request to sanction the above modification cf their original resolutions": Respectfully submitted, .Board of Public Works, By Geo.` A.' On Motion of Councilman Hiss the Communication was referred to the Committee of tEe Whole* Moti -RbETITION FOR CHANGE IN ZONING ORDINANCE* TO THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND: Comes, now, the undersigned peStitioners and respectfully show to-your honorable body that they rexppresent a majority of the property owners along East Jefferson Boulevard p =Z between Thirty - fifth Street and Thirty -sixth Street, in the city of South Bend, :St: Joseph Coun Indiana, and that they are desirous of effecting a change in the present zoning ordinance cover the following described property, to wit: " All that property bounded by a line beginning at a oint xazkk on the north line of Jefferson Boulevard Ninety - five and Forty -five Hundredths $95045) feet west of the west line of Thirty -fifth Street, north One Hundred and Fifty -nine (1 feet to the north line of the first -allejr north; thence east four hundred fifty -seven and forty five one hundredths (457.45) feet.to.the center 9f Thirty -sixth Street; thence south Three Hundred and Ninety -one and Fifty one - hundredths (391.'50) feet; thence west four hundred fifty - seven and forty --five one- hundredths (45745)'feet; thence north to the point of beginning." The Ordinance was given its Itral third.reading by title, and was placed upon its passage and passed by the following vote: Nelson, Whiteman, Rokop, Goetz, Hull, Jaworski, Altfeld, hiss, Oakley,._Grzeskowiak, Oripe and Gustin,,Ayes 12, Nays 0:',Ordinance adopted:' RESOLUTION. l[ INTRODUCED BY COUNCILMAN JOSEPH S. JAWORSKI. Whereas, in a resolution heretofore adopted setting forth proposed reductions in statutory salaries of certain city officials of the City of South.Bend it was intended that the Clerk of tlx Board of Public.Works receive eighteen hundred ($1#800'00) dollars per annum, commencing June 1, 1932, instead of nineteen hundred ( #1,90040) dollars as provided in said resolutioo:' Therefore,.be it resolved by the Cdmmon Council of the City of South Bend that it is the sense of the Common Council of the Oity of South Bend that the annual salary of the Clerk-of the Hoard -of Public Works be eighteen hundred ($1800:00) dollars per annum as of June 1st_, 1932 Be it further resolved by the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, that the proposed reductions in statutory salaries heretofore set forth in said resolution above referred be accepted by said Common Council of the City of South Bend for and on behalf of said City; that the amounts of such reductions to be received and/ or retained as donation to the General Fund of said Oity.
