Be it Remembered that the Common Council met in the Regular Session in the Council Chambe
in the City Hall, Monday evening December 22nd 1930 at the hour of 7 :50 R M.1 All
Members present 4, ,Tice— President Hull preside.:` The Minutes of the previous meeting
were read and on Motion of Councilmam Altfeld were referred to the Committee on the
Inspection and Supervision of Minutes:` Motion carried:

-The Hone" City Council, South Bend, Indiana.
Gentlemen of-the Council:
_- WHEAS_: The United States Government is obligated to pay in-1945 to-the World War
Veterans the sum of $3,500,000,000:00 as adjusted compensation; and
WHEREAS :'This money when distributed among the millions of the former soldiers
scattered: all over the United States will approximate an average of $700:00 per person; a3
HEREAS': this country is now in the throes of economic depression, and in
consequence of it man* of the world war veterans -are now in sericRie financial troux2ble
and in need of the necessities: of life, and such an .immediate distribution of said
$3000,000,000:00 to so many men scattered over the entire country wilk tend to bring
about the return of `prosperity to the _country at large and sof relief to thesoldiers
in particular;
WHEREAS : It has been reported that the President of-'the United States,, Herbert
Hooverm is considering a recommendation, in a special message, to the United States--
Congress the .*immediate payment of this money to the veterans instead of postmponing
it to 19+5, under the adjusted: compensation law; and
WHEREAS; .,The City Council of_:Sout4__Bend is-and ought to be interested in the welfare
of the 0` ty and of its citizens, among whom are many former soldiers--
MREFORE BE IT RESOLVED : that the Council of the City of South Bend, `Indiana, i$
give official expression to the U: &I Senators from the State of Indiana and to the,
Representative from the Thirteenth - Congressional District, to.the opinion that is very
prudent and also urgent that they express themselves favorable to the legislation and
do in their power all they case to.bring about the immediate payment of toe adjusted
compensatidn to the veterans of the World War, instead of- waiting until 1945:
