January 2, 1967
Be it remembered that the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, met in the Council Chambers
in the City Hall, January 2, 1967, at 12 :00 A.M. Mayor Lloyd M. Allen, who presided, called the meeting to
order. Mayor Allen expressed profound gratitude to the councilmen for their dedication: Ho.stated that
the present solvency of South Bend is due to a combination of community attitude and the confidence of the
people in general. He further stated that more attention be given the sociological and cultural aspects
of the city.
The following Councilmen were present: Councilmen -at- Large: Mrs. Janet Allen, Albert Palmer and John V. Wise;
First District Councilman: Richard G. Geib; Second District Councilman: Walter M. Szymkowiak; Third':
District Councilman: Robert 0 Laven .. Fourth :.Dlsfrict':Councilman:.�:John L:._Hunter,;Jr.; F'fth.District
Councilman Edwin Thomas Smith; and Sixth District Councilman: Chester Muszynski.
Mayor Allen Announced that nominations were now open for President of the Common Council. Councilman
Smith nomiRetfg C u 1 an John L. Hunter, Jr, for President of the Council. Councilman Wise seconded the
motion./ Councilman ise made a motion that nominations be closed. Councilman Muszynski seconded the motion.
Motion carried, and the Clerk was instructed to cast a unanimous vote for Councilman Hunter for President
of the Common Council.
Mayor Allen then announced that nominations were now open for the office of Vice - President of the Common Council.
Councilman Hunter nominated Councilman Wise for the office of Vice - President. Councilman Szymkowiak seconded
the motion. Motion carried. Councilman Muszynski made a motion that the nominations be closed. Councilman
Geib seconded the motion. Motion carried, and the Clerk was instructed to cast a unanimous vote for Councilman
Wise for Vice - President of the Common Council.
There being no further business to come before the Council, Councilman Hunter made a motion to adjourn.
Councilman Smith seconded the motion. Motion carried and the Organization Meeting of the Common Council
adjourned at 12:15 P.M.
