Home My WebLink About08-26-63 Council Meeting MinutestZV <iV 1.I1 GV, 17VJ Be it remembered that the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, met in Regular Session in the Council Chambers in the City Hall on Monday, August 26, 1963, at 10:57 P.M., with all members present. The meeting was call to order by President Joseph T. Kroll, who presided. ROLL CALL PRESENT: Councilmen Kroll, Allen, Ladewski, Tellson, Coleman, Glass, Krueper, Lehman and Muszynski. ABSENT: None. REPORT OF COMMITTEE'ON MINUTES To the Common Council of the City of South Bend: Your Committee on the inspection and supervision of the Minutes, would respectfully report that they have inspected the minutes of the previous meeting of the Council and found them correct. COMMUNICATION Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana Freda G. Noble, City Clerk Dear Freda: August 12, 1963 I wish to acknowledge the "Resolution" received in honor of "Jack" Voelkel. I feel very proud and honored. Jacks life touched a million people and feel sure you will all miss him but no one as greatly as I do. He was the finest gentleman and husband and always tried to do good for his fellowman. His life was Police work and I could have slowed him down, he wouldnt have been such a happy person as he was. Thank you again for being so thoughtful and I do appreciate it from the bottom of my heart. Councilman Muszynski made a motion that the petition be referred to the City Planning Commission. Councilman Allen seconded the motion. Motion carried. PETITION Petition of Wilford V. Walz as administrator of the estate of Dean Tasher to rezone land at the southeast corner of Michigan and Donmoyer Streets. Councilman Coleman made a motion that the petition be referred to the City Planning Commission. Councilman Allen seconded the motion. Motion carried. ORDINANCE NO. 4594 - - -63 AN ORDINANCE APPROVING A CONTRACT BETWEEN THE SOUTH BEND CITY WATER WORKS AND THE MC ALLISTER MACHINERY COMPANY, INC., FOR THE PURCHASE OF ONE CATERPILLAR, D -330 DIESEL ENGINE, CRAWLER TYPE TRACTOR BULLDOZER, FOR THE PRICE OF $12,990.00 The Ordinance was given first reading by title and second reading in full. Councilman Allen made a motion for suspen- sion of rules. Councilman Muszynski seconded the motion. Motion carried by a roll call vote of 8 ayes, 0 nays, 1 absent (Councilman Lehman). The Ordinance was then given third reading and passed by a roll call vote of 8 ayes, 0 nays, 1 absent, (Councilman Lehman). RESOLUTION NO. 42 - - -63 WHEREAS, the year 1963 marks the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Negro's Emancipation by Proclamation of President Abraham Lincoln, and said anniversary has been duly noted by President John F. Kennedy; and, WHEREAS, there is presently being held at McCormack Place in Chicago, Illinois (A Century of Progress Exposi tion), which depicts the contribution of Negro Citizens to the cultural, scientific, political, and civic life of America for the past 100 years; and, WHEREAS, Saturday, August 31, 1963, has been declared "INDIANA DAY" by the officials of said exposition and due proclamation has been made by Governor Matthew E. Welsh; and, WHEREAS, the 100 voice choir of the St. John Missionary Baptist Church of 1601 Liston Street, South Bend, Indiana, pastored by Reverend Bernard L. White, has been invited to and will be present on said date to represent the citizens of our great State of Indiana, in the observance of said "INDIANA DAY;" and, RESOLUTION NO. 42 - - -63 (continued) WHEREAS, the appearance and performance of said choir will reflect much credit upon our City of South Bend, Indiana, as well as constituting another Civic contribution. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, That they hereby extend congratulations and best wishes to the St. John Missionary Baptist Church and its pastor for their continued success in this and other similar efforts in the service of God and our Country. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that said Resolution be spread upon the records of the Council and duly authenticate copies thereof be sent to the St. John Missionary Baptist Church and the Officials of said Negro Century of Progress exposition in Chicago, Illinois. Resolution adopted by a roll call vote of 8 ayes, 8 nays, 1 absent (Councilman Lehman). Councilman Allen moved that the City Clerk address a communication to the Minnesota Mining Company, The St. Johns Business Machines Company and thank them for making the facilities available to project the proposed budget on the screen and to commend their representative Mr. Jack Badger for his courtesy. Councilman Glass seconded the motion. Motion carried. There being no further business to come before the Council, Councilman Coleman made ,a motion to adjourn. Councilman Glass seconded the motion.
