HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-26-62 Council Special Meeting Minutes 1SPECIAL MEETING JANUARY 26, 1962 Mfw Be it remembered that the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, met in Special Session in the Council Chambers on Friday, January 26, 1962, at 12:35 P.M., with all members present. The meeting was called to order by Joseph T. Kroll, President. The Clerk read the Call for Special Meeting, which reads as follows: CALL FOR A SPECIAL MEETING OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA We, the undersigned members of the Common Council, hereby call a Special Meeting of the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, to convene at the Council Chamber at the City Hall at 12t30 P.M., on the 26th day of January, 1962, for the purpose of acting upon the following: COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE MEETING REGULAR MEETING A RESOLUTION APPROVING AN ADDITIONAL TRACT OF LAND AS A PART OF PROPOSED LOW RENT HOUSING PROJECT IND. 15 -3, WHICH TRACT CONSISTS OF APPROXIMATELY TWO AND ONE -HALF (2 -1/2) ACRES OF LAND LYING SOUTH OF HOWARD STREET AND EAST OF JACOBS STREET IN THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA A RESOLUTION APPROVING AN ADDITIONAL TRACT OF LAND AS A PART OF PROPOSED LOW RENT HOUSING PROJECT IND. 15 -3, WHICH TRACT CONSISTS OF APPROXIMATELY TWO AND ONE -HALF (2 -1/2) ACRES OF LAND LYING SOUTH OF HOWARD STREET AND EAST OF JACOBS STREET IN THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA Dated this 24th day of January, 1962. /s/ Joseph T. NOBLE, CLERK The within call came to hand this 25th day of January, 1962, which I served by reading the same to each Councilman, upon the date designated, as follows: /s/ Harold L. Coleman /s/ Mrs. Chester Muszynski /s/ Eugene Ladewski /s/ J. Chester Allen /s/ Albert E. Tellson /s/ Paul E. Krueper, Jr. /s/ T. W. Lehman /s/ Walter G. Glass /s/ Joseph T. Kroll Or by leaving a certified copy thereof at the last and usual place of residence of such members as I was unable to find, as follows: /s/ Sgt. A. M. Krupa Member of the South Bend Police Department Councilman Glass made a motion that the Call for Special Meeting be accepted and placed on file. Councilman Lehman seconded the motion. Motion carried. President Kroll turned the meeting over to Councilman T. W. Lehman, Chairman of the Committee of the Whole. Councilman Lehman stated that since the meeting had been called to obtain more information in regard to the need for further public housing, he would call upon Henry Sucher, Director of the Urban Redevelopment Department and Jesse Dickinson, Director of the Housing Authority, for said information. Mr. Sucher presented a memorandum indicating the Redevelopment Commission believes that the site for approximately ninety (90) housing units previously approved by the Council will be adequate to meet the needs of those families displaced from the Chapin Street area who are eligible and willing to relocate in public housing. This is an estimate based on a survey obtained by a twenty per cent (20 %) sample. Mr. Dickinson presented a list showing the families from the Sample Street clearance who are now residing at the Plaza Apartments and also the number of registrations he has received for low -rent housing. Councilman Muszynski made a motion that the Resolution go to the Council as favorable. Councilman Kroll seconded the motion. Motion carried.by a roll call vote of 5 ayes, (Councilmen Kroll, Allen, Ladewski, Lehman and Muszynski), 4 nays (Councilmen Tellson, Coleman, Glass and Krueper). There being no further business to come before the Committee of the Whole, Councilman Muszynski made a motion to adjourn. Councilman Glass seconded the motion.
