HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-14-59 Council Meeting MinutesBe it remembered that the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, met in Regular Session in the Council Chambers in the City Hall on Monday, September 14, 1959, at 8 :08 P.M., with all members present. The meeting was called to order by Stanley C. Korpal, President, who presided. ROLL CALL: PRESENT: Councilmen Korpal, Erhardt, Tellson, Christman, Kroll, Glass, Hahn, Erler and Muszynski. ABSENT: None. MINUTES Report of Committee on Minutes To the Common Council of the City of South Bend: Your Committee on the inspection and supervision of the minutes, would respectfully report that they have inspect• ed the minutes of the previous meeting of the Council and found them correct. Councilman Kroll seconded the motion. Motion carried. COMMUNICATION August 21, 1959 Dear Mrs. Noble: I have your letter of August 20, 1959, with the Resolution adopted by the Common Council of the City of South Bend attached, concerning the recent Indiana State American Legion Convention held in South Bend. To say the least, I am most humble in my appreciation of this action, but without folks like you and your good Mayor, the Convention nould not have been the success it was. Letters have come to me from all over the State of Indiana in which the writers have expressed their appreciation of the hospitality of South Bend during the Convention. One sentence of the letter from Mr. Paul K. Jollif of Indiana- polis reads: "Roy, the Convention this year, beyond all doubt, surpasses any Convention the Indiana Department has ever held ", truly expresses the thought from most of the writers. Again thanks to you, your Mayor, Members of the City Council and the good people of South Bend, I am deeply grateful. Sincerely yours, /s/ Roy M. Amos Roy M. Noble City Of South Bend Office of the City Clerk South Bend, Indiana Dear Miss Noble: 0 -82 -4 August 21, 1959 Thank you very much for your letter of August 20 and for sending us a copy of the resolution adopted by the Common Council of the City of South Bend commending Mr. Roy Amos for his service in connection with the recent Department Convention. PETITION, Petition of Peter Bognar, et al, to rezone land located in the 800 block of West Washington Street. Councilman Kroll made a motion that the petition be referred to the City Planning Commission. Councilman Erhardt seconded the motion. Motion carried. PETITION Petition of Austin_ F. Riggs, et al, to rezone land at Howard and St. Francis Streets. Councilman Muszynski made a motion that the petition be referred to the City Planning Commission. Councilman Erhardt seconded the motion. Motion carried. REPORT OF COUNCIL HEALTH COMMITTEE The Health Committee of the Council met to consider the communication of the Leage of Women Voters regarding Municipal] REGULAR MEETING SEPTEMBER 14, 1959 147 trash collection. The Committee felt that, while there was a definite need for the collection of trash and rubbish, a survey should be made to determine the cost of such Municipal service to the taxpayers. Inasmuch as it is unsanitary to leave bottles and cans partially filled with food lying about where they may attract rats, it was suggested that such containers should be placed in a metal drum. We know that trash and rubbish are a health problem and find that most other cities are as much concerned with this problem as we are. We will ask for a survey concerning costs of such Municipal trash and rubbish removal from the City Engineer. /s/ Albert Tellson /s/ Joseph T. Kroll / s / W:; A. Councilman Glass seconded the motion. Motion carried. ORDINANCE AN ORDINANCE FOR ADDITIONAL APPROPRIATIONS IN FIRE DEPARTMENT AND CITY TREASURER IN AMOUNT OF $1870.00 AND TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT IN AMOUNT OF $1650.00 The Ordinance was given first reading by title and second reading in full. Councilman Erler made a motion that the Ordinance be set for public hearing on September 28, 1959. Councilman Muszynski seconded the motion. Motion carried ORDINANCE AN ORDINANCE FOR ADDITIONAL APPROPRIATIONS IN POLICE DEPARTMENT IN AMOUNT OF $2,400.00 The Ordinance was given first reading by title and second reading in full. Councilman Muszynski made a motion that the ordinance be set for public hearing on September 28, 1959. Councilman Kroll seconded the motion. Motion carried NEW BUSINESS Councilman Glass made a motion that the City Attorney look into the matter of meter readers for utility companies having emblems or badges with their pictures as identifying evidence of their authority to enter. Councilman Muszynski seconded the motion. Motion carried. There being no further business to come before the Council, Councilman Hahn made a motion to adjourn.
