COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE MEETING
JUNE 9, 1958
Be it Remembered that the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, met in the Committee of the Whole in the
Council Chambers on Monday June 9, 1958, at 8:21 P.M., with all members present. The meeting was called to order by
Councilman Carr, Chairman, who presided.
ORDINANCE
AN ORDINANCE CONTROLLING THE OPERATION OF
SELF - SERVICE LAUNDRIES
Proponents and opponents were given an opportunity to be heard on this Ordinance. Councilman Kroll made a motion to
amend the Ordinance as follows: There shall be added to Section I, (b) "There shall be an attendant on duty at all
times where a laundry open to the public has living quarters on any floor"
Also, There shall be added to Section 2 of the ordinance a subparagraph which will read as follows:
" (1) Before any new self - service laundry shall begin operation, inspection shall be made by the fire
department inspection bureau and approval given ".
Section III shall be amended to read as follows:
"It shall be the duty of the fire department inspection bureau to inspect each and every
self- service laundry whenever it is deemed necessary for the purpose of determining
whether or not the owner or operator therof is observing and abiding by the rules and
regulations of this Article. If any operator fails to correct any violation of this or-
dinance, or has not taken the necessary steps to an expeditious correction of any viola-
tion, cited by the fire inspection bureau, within twelve (12) hours after such notice of
violation, it shall then be the duty of the fire inspection bureau to take immediate
action to the end of closing such establishment pending the correction df such infraction ".
Councilman Glass seconded the motion. Motion carried.
Councilman Kroll then made a motion that the Ordinance, as amended, go to the Council as favorable. Councilman
Glass seconded the motion. Motion carried.
There being no further business before the Committee of the Whole, Councilman Korpal made a motion to adjourn.
Councilman Tellson seconded the motion. Motion carried and the Committee of the Whole meeting adjourned at 8:25 P.]
