ORGANIZATION MEETING JANUARY 3, 1972
(ORGANIZATION MEETING
JANUARY 3, 1972
BE IT REMEMBERED that the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana met in the Council
Chambers of the County -City Building on January 3, 1972 at 7:30 p.m. pursuant to a call for a
Special Meeting for the purpose of electing officers for the year 1972. The meeting was called
to order by Mayor Jerry J. Miller. The invocation was given by Reverend Gregory Green, Assistant
Pastor of St. Joseph's Church, 226 North Hill Street, South Bend, Indiana.
ROLL CALL
PRESENT: Councilmen -at -Large Frank Horvath, Peter J. Nemeth and Odell Newburn,
1st District Councilman Joseph T. Serge, 2nd.District Councilman Walter
M. Szymkowiak, 3rd District Councilman Terry S. Miller, 4th District
Councilman Roger 0. Parent, 5th District Councilman Robert G. Taylor,
and 6th District Councilman Walter T. Kopczynski.
(Mayor Miller announced that nominations were open for President of the Council. Councilman Serge
nominated Councilman Nemeth for President. Councilman Miller seconded the nomination. Councilman
Taylor moved that the nominations be closed and that a unanimous ballot be cast for Councilman
Nemeth for President. Councilman Horvath seconded the motion and it was carried unanimously.
Mayor Miller said that the new councilmen represent the type of leadership necessary to solve
the problems of our community. He continued, "the goals we have set will be accomplished. The
councilmen you have elected are going to work hard to solve the problems of our community. We
will need the help and prayers of everyone He then turned the gavel over to Council President
Nemeth.
(President Nemeth announced that nominations were open for Vice President. Councilman Horvath
nominated Councilman Szymkowiak for Vice President. The nomination was seconded by Councilman
(Kopczynski. Councilman Parent moved that the nominations be closed. Councilman Taylor seconded
the motion and it was carried. Councilman Newburn moved that a unanimous ballot be cast for
Councilman Szymkowiak for Vice President. Councilman Serge seconded the motion. Motion carried.
President Nemeth announced that nominations were open for Chairman of the Committee of the Whole.
Councilman Parent nominated Odell Newburn. Councilman Taylor seconded the nomination. Councilman
Serge moved that the nominations be closed. The motion was seconded by Councilman Horvath and
was carried. Councilman Taylor moved that a unanimous ballot be cast for Councilman Newburn for
Chairman of the Committee of the Whole. Councilman Kopczynski seconded the motion. Motion
carried.
President Nemeth thanked the Councilmen for the honor they had bestowed on him in electing him
President of the Council and thanked the members of the audience for attending the organization
meeting and for their help. He also extended the thanks of the Council to Mr. Richard J.
McDonald, City Chairman, for his part in the swearing-in ceremonies before the meeting convened,
and Mayor. Miller for convening and conducting the meeting,.
Councilman Szymkowiak announced that there would be refreshments served immediately following the
meeting.
Upon motion made by Councilman Kopczynski, seconded by Councilman Horvath, and carried
unanimously, the meeting adjourned at 7 :55 p.m.
